Back to Black for As You See It Challenges

As a demonstrator, I'm keenly aware at this time of year of all the Designer Series Paper I haven't used up yet. It's an issue for a demonstrator because almost all the DSP is retiring and there is no point in designing something and blogging about it, if you can't buy it anymore! I could use it for personal use, but I almost always use any cards I give to family and friends as blog entries. There is only so much time in a week! So I welcome opportunities to use up little scraps of DSP that I won't be able to resell at my Rubber Rummage Sale. Thanks to Amanda's sketch for As You See It Challenges #089, I was able to use up a lot of little scraps of Back To Black Designer Series Paper. Here's the great sketch:

And here's what I did with it:

  • This card is pretty simple, except for the 3D rose which I made using a five petal template. Here is a video tutorial I did showing you how to create one. I used the now-retired Fancy Flower Punch, which is a perfect size and shape for making these flowers, but you can use any 5 petal flower shape to do it, or even make your own template by punching out 5 one inch circles and overlapping them in a circle, gluing them together, then tracing around them. You'll need a total of three full flowers to get your 5 layers. The leaves are die cut from Basic Black using the Flower Fair Framelits.
  • The small squares of paper are punched from various Back To Black designs using the 1" Square punch. I used a punch since I am "square-challenged", but you could cut them on your Stampin' Trimmer without the need of the punch. I find it is just so darned handy, though. Lining them up on the card front evenly required a lightly drawn pencil line (and a good quality eraser!) and having the Whisper White layer centered on my grid paper so that I could measure an even distance between the squares. I always start with the middle square and work toward the sides, trimming off any excess afterwards.
  • The sentiment is one of my favourite from And Many More Stamp set and it is such a versatile greeting.
  • The layering of Basic Black and Whisper White that I did on the card base, takes the card from "ho-hum" to elegant, especially when you vary the width of the borders. It meant that I had a little less room for my "inchies", but a black and white card needs details like this to keep from being boring.

You've Got This for Colour Throwdown

I was visiting with a friend yesterday who has the most beautiful garden. She is a painter and her canvas is soil and her palette is flowers. One of the blooms she had in a vase on the table was a gorgeous yellow rose, and when I decided to do the beautiful Colour Throwdown Challenge #344, I was inspired to do some watercolouring with the image from the new stamp set, You've Got This! Love that set! You're going to want to order it! Just sayin'!

  • I picked Pear Pizzazz for my green, Pink Pirouette for the pastel pink, and So Saffron for the yellow, even though it's a bit darker than the sample. I added a little Daffodil Delight to lighten it up when I was watercolouring.
  • I used White Stampin' Emboss Powder to emboss the outline of the flower and then used an Aquapainter to add the ink to the image. I kept it quite wet and added the colour at the base of the leaves and petals and drew it up to the top of each one. I added a little blush of Pink Pirouette to the top of some of the petals
  • The sentiment is one of three great ones from the same stamp set, You've Got This. I stamped it in Tuxedo Black Memento Ink. I love the background stamp in this set. It makes a perfect backdrop for any water-coloured image.
  • I used some of the Pear Pizzazz 1/4" Cotton Ribbon to create a little fork bow for a finishing touch on the card.

Posies and Papillons for The Paper Players

Okay, I'm reaching the point where I need to do a big order of new products from the new 2015/16 Annual Catalogue! I know that I am really lucky to be able to order a few products from the Sneak Peek pre-order, but I've kind of exhausted them now and I've psychologically detached myself from most of the retiring products, so it's time for something new! Especially, DSP! I felt bereft of inspiration when it came time to create something for The Paper Players' Challenge this week, but I got out a combination that I previously really liked with the In Colour Envelope Paper and Tip Top Taupe, I used a stamp from I Think You're Great to stamp a Watermelon Wonder Posie and good old Papillon Potpourri to add some butterflies, and Boom! I had a card!  Here's The Paper Players' Challenge #246:

It's a great sketch from Anne Marie Hile! This is my take on it:

  • I had butterflies on the brain with this one. Papillon Potpourri is a stamp set I haven't used in forever, but the bitty butterflies were perfect for the three small elements on the left in the sketch and they looked so much better with a stamped image than just punched out of cardstock with the Bitty Butterfly punch. The same with the larger butterfly punched out with the Elegant Butterfly Punch. All the butterfly images are stamped in Tip Taupe Top on coloured cardstock.
  • The sentiment is from Butterfly Basics stamp set.  I just love the scripts used in its sentiments. It turns out that it shows up well stamped right onto the Mint Macaron striped Envelope Paper with Tip Top Taupe ink.
  • The flower is from one of the images in I Think You're Great. I stamped it on Whisper White with Watermelon Wonder ink and trimmed the sides off so that it would look even in a square. I matted it with a larger rectangle of Tip Top Taupe cardstock and a narrow border of Watermelon Wonder cardstock.
We are in the midst of a redecorating project at my house. It was decorated with dark, warm colours in a Tuscan villa kind of look for years. We've decided to go with a beachy decor with light cool colours, except we don't want to change furniture because our leather couch and chair are in next-to-new condition, so we'll see how they fit in. I'm excited to finally get the time for this project. I'll have some before and after photos when we're done.

Thanks for your visit! Come back soon!
