Speed Stamping Whale Done for Funny As You See It Challenge

speed stamping whale done for aysi 1

Whale, whale, whale! This is the first time I've ever had to have a do-over for a speed stamping challenge! I may have come close to the limit, but I've never had it go so badly that I've had to start over. But there's a first time for everything and that's what happened to my Design Team Sample today for As You See It Challenge #259.

challenge #259

You see, we're were supposed to make a funny card in under 10 minutes. I looked over my stamp sets and went with my Whale Done stamp set because it has a couple of punny sentiments. I also thought I could use some of the Expressions in Ink Specialty Designer Series Paper as water and that would save time.

However, I didn't count on the paper not accepting the ink very well when I tried to stamp sea weed right onto it!! It looked dreadful and as I tried to come up with ways to remedy the situation, I ran completely out of time! And to make matters worse, I had also forgotten that the stamped whale is the opposite direction to the punch so I couldn't punch it out, I had to fussy cut it. None of those circumstances were possible to find out ahead of time, they blindsided me!

So, I did the only thing I could do - I reset the timer and started again! Here's the result:

  • On a Just Jade card base I added a layer of Expressions in Ink Specialty DSP. On the DSP, I was able to stamp a couple of seahorses, but I wasn't able to stamp seaweed and I decided it looked better without anyway.
  • I stamped the whale in Shaded Spruce in and fussy cut the image.
  • I stamped the top sentiment in Shaded Spruce as well and die cut it and it's Brushed Metallic cardstock backing with the Thoughtful Label dies.
  • I found the bottom sentiment in my stash already stamped and die cut. It's mounted with dimensionals as is the whale.
  • I added some Holiday Rhinestone Basic Jewels to finish it off.
  • I completed the card in 9 minutes and 8 seconds second time around. The adrenalin is still pumping!!

Alcohol Ink Blending with Friends are Like Seashells for As You See It Sketch Challenge #254

alcohol ink blending for aysi 254 1

Fridays seem to come around with frightening frequency these days! Seems like just yesterday I was writing my last post for As You See It Challenges two weeks ago, but here we are again. Could be because I've been taking some trips to camp and to see my grandkids and that seems to both make time fly and to put me behind in my work.

Whatever the situation, here we are again with another awesome As You See It Sketch Challenge:

aysi sketch

This challenge is called Focal Point and was designed by fellow Design Team member Amy! I think you can see that she's done you a real favour with her sketch, because having a focal point in your project is a real design bonus!

I wanted to incorporate the Expressions in Ink Designer Series Paper in my project, now that we can get it again, and use some alcohol ink blending on vellum to go along with the paper. And because it's summer, I went back to an old favourite stamp set - Friends are Like Seashells and it's bundled die set, Seaside Seashells dies.

  • I started by layering a Mint Macaron card base, a Sahara Sand 4" x 5 1/4" cardstock piece and a 3 3/4" x 5" piece of Expressions in Ink Specialty DSP as shown above.
  • I took a piece of vellum and coloured it with patches of dark Pale Papaya, Calypso Coral, Cinnamon Cider and Soft Succulent Stampin' Blends, which are alcohol based inks. Using a paint brush, I dabbed all these patches of ink with 99%+ isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). *Note: it needs to be at least 90% or more or the vellum will warp and curl because of too much water content.
  • The inks will blend together and can be dried well with the heat tool.
  • I then heat embossed the big moonsnail shell, the sand dollar and the starfish using Gold embossing powder from the Metallics collection on the blended vellum sheet.
  • I die cut all these using the Seaside Seashell dies.
  • Using the seaweed die from Smooth Sailing dies, I die cut some seaweed from the vellum and also from some Gold Foil Sheet backed with an Adhesive Sheet so it could be easily mounted on the project like a sticker.
  • I cut a strip from the gold stripes design of the Expressions in Ink Specialty DSP that was 3/4" x 4 3/4".
  • The sentiment is from the Friends are like Seashells stamp set and I embossed it in gold on Basic White cardstock and die cut it with the Tasteful Labels flag die.
  • All the elements were arranged on the card front and adhered as shown.
  • Some knotted Linen Thread was arranged an added at the end.
