Closing the Cabin on Labour Day for As You See It Challenges

I can't believe it is the last weekend in August and Labour Day looms on Monday! Wow! Like where did summer go? We just managed to get the kayak out for the first time last weekend! Seriously?? This year it wasn't smoke that kept us inside, it was rain and busyness.

My card today is for As You See It Challenge's colour challenge #208 - Night Glow! What I envisioned was the last weekend at the summer cottage, closing it up for the season. And the colours in the challenge banner were perfect for that:

The evening sky, the sun setting, the lake reflecting, the bare trees, the few leaves blowing along the dock and the Adirondack chair, a little worse for wear after the long summer, all could be portrayed with these colours plus a couple of neutrals.

  • Now since it is time for my September newsletter to come out next week, this will be the free tutorial that I will be including in with my free monthly newsletter if you are subscribed to it.
  • It is a photo tutorial with step-by-step instructions accompanied by photographs and includes all materials needed along with measurements.
  • The stamp sets and dies that you need include Colourful Seasons stamp set, High Tide stamp set, Winter Woods stamp set, Seasonal Layers dies,  and the Pinewood Planks 3D embossing folder. The technique you will learn will be how to sponge a background, particularly a sunrise or sunset sky.

Under the Sea Dies for As You See It Challenges

This week's challenge at As You See It Challenges is a Theme type. And the theme is one that I've been looking forward to for a long time, Beaches! If you know me, you know how I love the beachy look. My house is all beach decor and I buy almost all the beach related products Stampin' Up! has to offer. Here's the Challenge Banner:

Sand, waves, sea shells, and starfish! I love it all. I didn't hesitate, I went straight for my Under the Sea dies and got to work.

  • I used some of the new In colours including Pretty Peacock, Seaside Spray and Terracotta Tile in my project. Can you tell which is which by now?
  • I went to the High Tide stamp set for the sentiment and used the Stitched Shapes framelits and the Layering Squares framelits to die cut it and back it with a scallop square shape.
  • Most of the die cuts are from Under the Sea, but I got a couple of the shapes from other sources. The vellum sea weed is from the Smooth Sailing Die Set, and the glittery sand dollar and the starfish I got from the June Paper Pumpkin pack along with the vellum small coral pieces.
  • I don't know if you can see it, but the Seaside Spray piece of cardstock in the middle was embossed using the High Seas 3D Embossing Folder.
  • The Sahara Sand background paper is from the Woven Threads Designer Series Paper pack and it's the perfect colour and texture for sand, don't you think?
Why don't you play along with us at As You See It this weekend? Just make a card in a beachy theme, photograph it and upload it either to your blog or to a public forum such as Pinterest or Splitcoaststampers or Facebook, then find the URL address of the page you've uploaded it to and go to our challenge site and upload it to participate. Enjoy the fun of creating!!

A Good Man for a Retirement Card

A former teaching colleague of mine will finally be retiring soon. He is a few years younger than many of us that were on the same staff when it was a solid group, full of fun and he was the one that kept us all laughing! But one by one, we all retired, leaving him hanging on and wishing he could join us as we traveled and did other things with our lives besides teaching. But this is the year for him, and I wanted to make him a card to celebrate the end of a fulfilling but stressful career. Time to take a little time for himself! So the new stamp set *A Good Man was the perfect set to choose because it has an image that is just right. Take a look:

  • On the main image panel, I took some Shimmery White cardstock and did some watercolour washes in Sahara Sand, Pool Party and Balmy Blue (for the sand, sea and sky respectively).
  • Then I stamped the main image from *A Good Man on in Memento Tuxedo Black ink. I also added part of the sandpiper image from the Saleabration set ***By the Bay and the grasses from High Tide and the flying birds from the new *Sailing Home. These were all stamped in Memento ink.
  • Then I got out my Stampin' Blends to colour in the images that needed it. I used the Pool Party Combo on the Tshirt, and the Crumb Cake Combo on the shorts, along with Soft Suede Combo on the hat. The chair has a Bermuda Bay stripe with a Crumb Cake light background. I added a little Crumb Cake Combo to the bird as well.
  • As for the sentiments, the top "Congrats" is from the *Sailing Home stamp set and the bottom one is from *A Good Man stamp set.
  • The card base in Night of Navy, which also backs the main image panel. The Designer Series Paper is from the *Come Sail Away collection. I added a partial strand of Burlap Ribbon to the DSP before adhering it down. I used my faithful ***Fast Fuse for that, which I am hoarding and I don't know what I'll do when it runs out finally!
*These products will be available in the 2019 - 2020 Stampin' Up! Annual Catalogue, starting June 4, 2019.
**These products will be retiring and no longer available in the 2019 - 2020 Annual Catalogue starting June 4, 2019.
***These products are no longer available from Stampin' Up!

WHATTT! There are only 8 more days to shop from the 2018-19 Annual Catalogue and the 2019 Occasions Catalogue!!

Time is running out, folks and eventually your last chance will have come and gone! Check over your old catalogue to be sure that you aren't forgetting something you really need. And have you noticed that the paper prices have gone up significantly? Why not stock up on some paper and save yourself some money?
