Mojo Monday Bon Voyage

For Mojo Monday Challenge #347, I was inspired by the new Traveler Stamp Set to create a Bon Voyage card. I can remember being jealous of a friend of mine, back when we were young teens, because her family was taking her to England for a vacation.  That was great, because we were both fans of British mystery novels, but what I was most jealous of was that she was going by sea, and the voyage would take the better part of a week or two, at that time. I could picture her on the deck of the ocean liner, meeting with a variety of handsome fellow travellers or sailors and the whole idea seemed so romantic to me.

Never mind that I was subject to the most abysmal motion sickness, and if it had been me, I probably would have spent the entire voyage in my cabin on my cot or in the loo, but I could still dream. Flash forward 48 years or so and I still haven't gone on that cruise! I know ships are better equipped to lessen the effects of sea sickness and there are much more effective remedies, but something still cautions me not to spend a gob of money on a vacation I may never enjoy!  I think maybe I should try a short cruise, just to see how I do. Maybe to Alaska.  Oh, wait! Aren't there ice bergs on that route?  (Pictures a sinking Titanic in her head.)

Here's the sketch for the challenge this week:
It's a tall and skinny design so the finished card size is 3 1/2" X 6".  Are you ready for the reveal?

  • I used the Traveler Stamp Set which is new in the 2014-15 Annual Catalogue, soon to be available for you to order come June 2!  It has a vintage flavour to it and so that is how I played it.  I created a collage stamped background with many of the images from that set, as well as the camera as the focal point.
  • The colours I used were the new Lost Lagoon, Soft Suede, Sahara Sand and Very Vanilla.  They create a soft vintage palette.
  • The strip of DSP is from the Moonlight Designer Series Paper Stack, from the new Annual Catalogue and it makes me think of waves so that's appropriate for a Bon Voyage card.
  • It's been a while since I have used the Vintage Trinkets - little safety pins and button-like brads in antique metal finishes- and I'm going to miss them because they are retiring.  If you like these you'd better order them soon, before they're gone for good.
  • Another retiree is the Victoria Crochet trim, and I would be extra sad about that, except that we have a different crochet trim in the new Annual Catalogue. Too bad the Victoria Crochet Trim is already sold out.  Hope you weren't still wanting it.
  • The sentiment is from Just Sayin' Stamp set, which is in the Occasions Catalogue and will be also featured in the new Annual Catalogue.  I inked it up with a Soft Suede Stampin' Write Marker so I could just use the words and not the word bubble.
Thanks for dropping by and leave me a comment about any voyages you have been on.  Have any of you who are prone to motion sickness gone on a cruise?  How did you do?  Should I try it someday?

As You See It Challenge #024 Coordinated with The Paper Players

Happy Valentine's Day!  Hope it's a romantic day for you, or not, if you are one of the Valentine's Day Haters in the world.  We have a sketch challenge this week from As You See It Challenges and it is a very CAS diagram and, at first I didn't quite know how to make it unique.

Pretty straight forward, like Yin and Yang!  But then I remembered The Paper Player's Colour Challenge that I had not done yet.

I thought this colour scheme would give the sketch a unique look.  At first, I thought posting my AYSI design on schedule for today would be too late for The Paper Players, but I squeaked in under the wire!  This is my design:

  • I used the Gold Foil Sheets for the left panel and embossed it with one of the narrow Delicate Designs embossing folders.  I used some of the Crisp Cantaloupe twine from the Sweet Sorbet Accessories Pack in the Sale-A-Bration brochure to tie a random little bow around the gold panel.
  • The Midnight Muse card base is layered with some of the Gold Fancy Foil Vellum.  I found it a little more challenging to adhere it because the gold foil elements are smaller than a glue dot and so can't camoflage them as well.  I cut a couple in half to accomplish the task.
  • The sentiment is from the Just Sayin' stamp set and I inked it up in Crisp Cantaloupe and Midnight Muse using Stampin' Write Markers.  The Word Bubbles Framelits die cut the thought bubble.

Now, speaking of Sale-A-Bration, I know I've mentioned that it is a great time to hold a workshop with your friends, because Stampin' Up has increased the Hostess Rewards by $40 for all parties with sales of $400 (before tax and shipping).  Plus your friends will get free product for every $60 they spend.  I have had several people book a workshop during Sale-A-Bration and my time is getting booked up.  I have more time available in February than in March, but if you're interested in taking advantage of these great rewards during Sale-A-Bration, then please contact me soon, as Sale-A-Bration ends March 31st.

If you're from out-of-town, then we can do an On-Line Workshop for you.  You simply get catalogues to your friends or get them to go on-line to my Stampin' Up website to order using a Hostess Code.  I will provide some tutorials that only you and your friends can access, along with packs of consumable materials minus the stamps and inks (which they could order if they wanted or use their own.)  You would get the hostess benefits just as if the workshop was in your house and all you have to do is invite your friends to take part and get the materials and their orders to them!  How's that for easy?

If you are from my area, then you can hold the workshop at your house or mine.  At my house, I would do the cleaning and baking.  All you have to do is invite your friends.  Again, easy peasy!

Call me at 250-768-7379 or email me to get started with the planning.

Retro Valentine Trio

One just wasn't enough.  I got on a roll and had to make a trio of retro Valentine cards using the Retro Fresh products and the Crazy Mixed Up Love stamp set.  One card was the one I shared yesterday, and the other two are new projects.

Aren't they cute?  You've got to admit that Crazy Mixed Up Love is a great set for light-hearted, funky Valentine cards.  Let's take a closer look at the two new designs.

  • This one was created for Freshly Made Sketches Challenge #122 and also features the Retro Fresh Designer Series Paper and the same colour palette as yesterday, but with more emphasis on the So Saffron.  I also added a little Woo Hoo! from Just Sayin', presumably exclaimed by the one who gets to pucker up!  It was die cut using the Word Bubbles Framelits.
  • Here's the Freshly Made Sketches challenge sketch:
  • I used the Deco Labels Collection framelits and the 2 3/8" Scallop Punch to provide a backing for my pucker-up lemon.  I added a few little hearts from the Just Sayin' stamp set in Tangerine Tango to add some pop to the otherwise subdued citrus fruit.
  • The So Saffron background is embossed using the Scallops Textured Impressions Embossing Folder.

Here's the last of the trio, a tribute to the icon fashion item of the seventies, Bell bottoms:

  • This was a super fun card to make because I had to create the bell bottoms from scratch.  I folded some scrap paper in half and sketched half a pair of pants, then cut them out, opened the fold and voila!  A great template for bell bottoms!
  • To add detail to them, I used Retro Fresh Designer Washi Tape for a bottom border and some pocket inserts.  Then I did some paper piercing using the Essentials Paper Piercing Pack and the Piercing Tool.
  • The Hung Up Cute Clips had the perfect hanger to use with the sentiment from Crazy Mixed Up Love.
  • And do you see more washi tape?  I'm loving that stuff now.  I created a little tag by rounding the corners of a Very Vanilla rectangle, and stamped the sentiment on it with Baked Brown Sugar ink.
  • The backing is another 2 3/8" Scallop Circle punched from So Saffron.  Don't you love the little diamond pattern from the Retro Fresh DSP?
  • The wooden mini-clothespins are from the Heartfelt Banner Sale-A-Bration Kit which you can earn free with a $60 order during Sale-A-Bration.  The twine is from another Sale-A-Bration set called Sweet Sorbet Accessories Pack.
