Nothing's Better Than Shutter Card for March's Newsletter

nothings better than shutter card 1

Well, it's newsletter writing time again and I need another photo tutorial to share with all the subscribers to my monthly newsletter, so I designed a shutter card using the Nothing's Better Than Bundle.

A shutter card is a fun fold card that has a mechanism whereby, when it is opened, a shutter opens, like on a camera, revealing the image behind it.

Here's a little video showing the action:

And a close up photo of the card before it's open:

Without giving away too many details, because you will get all the details in the free photo tutorial by subscribing to my monthly newsletter (also free):

  • The card base is appropriately Early Espresso and folded gatefold fashion.
  • The outer panels and some of the inside panels are covered with the Love You Always Specialty Designer Series Paper
  • The belly band is also Early Espresso covered with the Rococo Rose version of the same specialty DSP.
  • The sentiment is die cut using one of the Tasteful Label dies. The word Coffee and the coffee cup are die cut on Foam Adhesive Sheets to pop them off the paper. The dies are part of the Love You More Than dies that are bundled with the Nothing's Better Than stamp set.
  • The shutters, inside the card, are stamped using an assortment of small images from the Nothing's Better Than stamp set.

Always in My Heart for Freshly Made Sketches

always in my heart for freshly made sketches 1

This is my first Valentine card of the year and I made it with materials from the Love You Always Suite from the new Jan/Jun Mini Catalogue. It has some lovely Designer Series Paper and Foil and I was torn about which stamp bundle to get because they are both useful and very tempting. I picked the Always in My Heart Bundle strictly for that ornate heart die, but now I'm kind of wishing I'd picked the Forever & Always Bundle for the dies that coordinate with the True Love DSP and for the large die cut words. Oh, well, hindsight is 50/50 as they say!

I wanted to play along with the sketch for Freshly Made Sketches Challenge #468. Here is the banner for the challenge:

Both the Love You Always Specialty Designer Series Paper and the Love You Always Foil Sheets have a shiny metallic finish, so make this card particularly flashy. I tend to like my Valentine cards to be a little-over-the-top, so this is okay with me. This design could be toned down by replacing some of the shiny foil with a similar colour in a plain designer paper or cardstock.

  • The Love You Always Specialty Designer Series Paper is featured in the background and on the fourth layer - the smaller horizontal, Sahara Sand coloured one.
  • The Love You Always Foil Sheets are used in the Blushing Bride vertical layer, and in the Sahara Sand heart die cut, which is found in the Floral Heart Dies.
  • On top of the Sahara Sand Love You Always Specialty DSP layer, is a layer of the Pearlescent Paper found in the Sand & Sea Suite.
  • The center of the heart is stamped on Very Vanilla in Blushing Bride ink, with an image from the Always in my Heart stamp set, and is die cut with the same die from the Floral Heart Dies, so the heart fits right in the center. The rest of the ornate Very Vanilla die cut can be saved for another project.
  • Every layer is adhered flat to the card front except for the Sahara Sand Love You Always Specialty DSP, which is added with Stampin' Dimensionals.
  • The die cut heart is added with Glue Dots.
  • The finishing touch is the addition of several Pastel Pearls, from the Hydrangea Hill Suite.

Old Meets New: Poinsettia Dies with Love You Always Paper

old meets new love you always 1

Though I'm getting a bit jaded with Christmas cards, I thought some new materials might inject a little inspiration into the creative process and a marriage was born! Old meets new: the Poinsettia Dies working with some of the new paper in the up coming 2021 Jan/Jun Mini Catalogue! The paper I used included the *Love You Always Foil Sheets, *Love You Always Specialty Designer Series Paper, and *Pearlescent Specialty Paper.

*These products are from the upcoming 2021 Jan/June Mini Catalogue and will be available to order until Jan. 5, 2021.

I worked with a palette of Blushing Bride, Soft Sea Foam, Sahara Sand and Silver.

I love the non-traditional, soft pastel palette, yet with the foil, it gives a festive look along with the poinsettia theme.

Looking more closely, you can see the details:

  • On a Sahara Sand base, the background paper is *Love You Always Specialty Designer Series Paper, so beautiful with foil accent designs in Blushing Bride, Rococo Rose and Sahara Sand. Shown here is the Blushing Bride.
  • The Stitched Nested Label Die cut is cut from *Pearlescent Specialty Paper. It provides a background for the beautiful poinsettia.
  • The *Love You Always Blushing Bride Foil Sheets were used to die cut the poinsettia petals with the Poinsettia Dies, which emboss and die cut at the same time. The leaves were cut from Soft Sea Foam, while the berries were also cut from the *Love You Always Blushing Bride Foil Sheets.
  • The center is Silver Foil Sheets. The sentiment, from the retiring Cherish the Season stamp set, is heat embossed with Silver Stampin' Emboss Powder. The sentiment strip was punched into a banner end using the Banners Pick a Punch.
*These products are from the upcoming 2021 Jan/June Mini Catalogue and will be available to order until Jan. 5, 2021.
