Shadow Box 3D Frame for Global Design Project

I have a new kind of class coming up tomorrow night, one I haven't offered before, called Tea and 3D. Although there will be more than tea to drink, (tea just happens to rhyme with 3D) the focus of the class will be making items that are not necessarily cards, but have some dimension to them. For example, our two projects tomorrow night will be a Shadowbox 3D Frame as you can see above, and a holder for making a gift of about 8 - 10 of your own hand stamped greeting cards to someone.

Coincidentally, over at the Global Design Project, they have a 3D or off the page theme going on, so this project fits the bill perfectly:

I was excited to pair the Falling in Love Designer Series Paper with the Beautiful You stamp set, especially for a decor item. Some of the sentiments from Beautiful You make great wall decor, as do most of the images.

  • There are lots of patterns in the Falling in Love Designer Series Paper that would work for this project, but this was my favourite, because you could make the frame with the falling hearts design and use the flowing lace for the inside. I like the way it looks 3 dimensional, like the woman is dancing through a lace curtain.
  • How you make the shadowbox frame is a matter for me to teach in my class and if you'd like to find out how simple it is, please come on out to the class if you're in the area. It does require a 12" x 12" piece of DSP however.
  • I stamped the sentiment and the image from Beautiful You on the inside of the frame with Basic Black Archival Ink and I stamped the image once again on a piece of one of the corners that I cut out of the DSP while making the frame. I fussy cut the dress and hat only from the DSP and glued it on the stamped image inside the frame being careful to match the stamped lines. It makes such a great fabric design for the dress and hat.
  • The butterfly embellishments on the frame, (which, you'll notice, are off the frame/page) are die cut with the Bold Butterfly Framelits from Blushing Bride and Sahara Sand cardstock. Some Very Vanilla Lace Trim and a Falling in Love Embellishment add the finishing touches.
  • You could hang this on a wall or place it on or in a bookcase or shelf for decor purposes. It would make a great gift.

So Detailed Thinlits for Freshly Made Sketches

The beauty and elegance of some of the new Stampin' Up! products in our Occasions Catalogue is beyond compare really and I had a brain wave when I was planning my card yesterday. I wanted to use one of my detailed dies and then emboss the die cut with Gold Stampin' Emboss Powder (or any metallic embossing powder for that matter). Then I saw the latest Freshly Made Sketches' Challenge for this week and I knew which one I wanted to use: Here's the layout:

It was perfect for the So Detailed Thinlit Dies and I could just see the beautiful Falling in Love Designer Series Paper behind it! Then I had to find some sentiments to fit the die cuts and that turned out to be a difficult task. You see, my sister's best friend, since she was in high school 48 years ago, passed away yesterday, and I wanted to make a sympathy card for her. I turned to the Wetlands stamp set and the Flourishing Phrases set for the sentiments.

  • After die cutting the center band, I embossed the Thinking of You sentiment on the center section. I had to be very careful with it because it just fits! Then I pressed the intricately die cut parts into the Versamark ink and sprinkled on more Gold Stampin' Emboss Powder, using a paint brush to brush away any powder that was too heavily concentrated. Then I heat set it with the Heat Tool. Likewise, I embossed the sentiment at the bottom of the Very Vanilla panel in gold.
  • I centered the die cut panel on a piece of the Falling In Love Designer Series Paper, as wide as the Very Vanilla panel but shorter and glued both pieces onto the card front of Sahara Sand.
  •  I used the new Very Vanilla 1/4" Satin Ribbon to tie a small bow to add to card front as well.

Builder Birdcage for The Paper Players

Ever notice how, when you're in the biggest hurry, things never go right? I've got a big catalogue launch tomorrow and I've been working hard to prepare for it along with about a dozen other jobs that need doing and so I was in a hurry to get my blog post done and out of the way, but it was trying to tell me to slow down, I guess, because nothing was going right! Even things that shouldn't have been happening were, like the Archival Basic Black ink running a bit with a touch of water from an Aqua Painter, even though it had been dried with the heat tool quite a while before!! I mean, it's made for watercolouring and it's never done that before. I'm sure it was just because I was in a hurry! Then I wasn't happy with a single birdcage from the new set, Builder Birdcage from the Occasions Catalogue, so I decided I needed to stamp another just behind it. That meant that I had to mask the little bird so that it would look like the bars of the second birdcage were behind it. In the end, I'm passably happy with the outcome, but would probably have started over if time had allowed!

I used the Colour Challenge from The Paper Players for this card:

and used Calypso Coral as my one other colour.

  • I wanted to try a watercolour background using the Watercolour Pencils and an Aqua Painter, so I used the Calypso Coral pencil and blended it with an Aqua Painter. I picked up some extra Calypso Coral ink from the lid of the ink pad and splattered it on the Whisper White card front before drying it all with the Heat Tool. This is where the incident with the running black ink occured so I tried to duplicate it in other spots to even it out.
  • I stamped the two perches and two birds first, the former in Basic Black Archival Ink, and the latter in Calypso Coral. I stamped a bird on a sticky note where the adhesive is and cut it out. I stamped the two pieces of the large cage from Builder Birdcage over the birds. I then masked the bird on the left side and stamped the smaller cage as you see in the photo. That makes it look as if it is behind the other one.
  • The sentiment is from the Lift Me Up stamp set and it is set in the label from Rose Wonder which is die cut with a tag from the Rose Garden thinlits
