Crafters Don't Lie, They Embellish

The Occasions Catalogue only has one Host set in it. It's called Love You Sew, and I've been dying to use it! I got my chance on my crafter's retreat two weekends ago and I really had some fun with it. My favourite sentiment among all the great ones that are part of that set is: Crafters don't lie, they embellish, which I decided to use for my card. I got out my Farmer's Market Designer Series Paper just for the gingham paper in it and picked a palette of Bermuda Bay, Old Olive Crumb Cake and Pumpkin Pie.

And I went to work:

  • The layout is a bit boring, but I wanted the sentiment to be the star of the show and this arrangement allows it to shine. It's a simple card to make, so give it a try! Want to earn this  cute stamp set? Just contact me to set a date for a private class for you and some of your friends. With qualifying sales, you could earn it for free!
  • I just adore all the great crafting images. The two-toned ones I inked up with my Stampin' Write Markers. I love the different stitches that are part of the set. I used my Stamp-A-Ma-Jig to get the different stitches that are part of the set aligned properly. If you want to know how to use a Stamp-A-Ma-Jig, click on this link to take you to a video tutorial about it. The Bermuda Bay 1/8" Stitched Ribbon is the perfect thing to use as an embellishment here.

A Nice Cuppa for As You See It Challenges

It's Friday! Another week come and gone! I hope it was a good one for you. What do you do when you are tired or stressed? Quite often my hubby will make me a nice cup of herbal tea. My favourite is Warmth by Tetley, or Chai. Just the act of sitting down with a nice warm cuppa can change your perspective on life. I was thinking about needing a cup of tea as I've been working overtime to compensate for taking some time off next week. One of the things I needed to do was to come up with two new designs for As You See It Challenges, this week's and the following week's. I just got the new stamp set, A Nice Cuppa, and thought it would be perfect for Amanda's sketch:

The three panels have to be quite narrow to fit on a standard size card, so I thought I would stamp a larger image and cut it into three sections.

  • I came up with a different colour scheme here: I have a Pear Pizzazz base with some Farmer's Market Gingham DSP as the next layer. The teacup is Calypso Coral with accents of Daffodil Delight and Watermelon Wonder. The steam is stamped in Sahara Sand and the knife and spoon are die cut from Sahara Sand cardstock.
  • The great thing about this A Nice Cuppa stamp set is the great Cups & Kettle Framelits that coordinate with it. They can be purchased separately, but are also available as a bundle that saves you 15%. I only used the knife and spoon framelits this time, but I can't wait to try out the other shapes, including a great teapot.
  • I'm sad that you can't see, in real life the clear embossing that I did on the steam and the Watermelon Wonder heart. It really adds some dimension to the images. I actually stamped over the already stamped images with Versamark ink. (The photopolymer stamps make this quite easy actually, as you can see through them to match up the images exactly.) I added Clear Stampin' Emboss Powder and heat set it. Immediately, I added more embossing powder. (You have to be really quick, before it cools and is smooth, not sticky.) I heat set it again and repeated those steps a couple of times.
Next week, while I am on holidays, I will be posting fewer cards and sharing some new product videos from Stampin' Up! I am looking forward to some time off.  Enjoy your weekend!

Kinda Eclectic Farmer's Market for As You See It Challenges

I love a good Farmer's Market, don't you? I love looking at stall after stall of excellent locally grown produce. But even more I love looking at the crafts that people are selling! The creativity and the artistry are really inspiring! More than that though, is the social aspect of the market. For two of my daughters, who live in small towns, the weekly Farmer's Market is a real social affair.

A good percentage of the population will turn up to shop and to visit. Usually there are some good eats on site and a good time is had by all! Farmer's Markets are especially colourful and abundant in the fall when the harvest is on and I was thinking of that when I went to create my Design Team sample for As You See It Challenges today. As well as the sketch challenge from As You See It, I wanted to do a Colour Challenge from Pals Paper Arts:

The colours for this challenge, as you can see, are Delightful Dijon, Old Olive and Cajun Craze. These are not the easiest colour to find coordinating Designer Series Paper for, but I remembered the Old Olive Gingham design in the Farmer's Market Designer Paper and I took it from there:

  • I used Sahara Sand as my neutral on the card base and the wood design paper to make the vertical element in the sketch.
  • I wanted ribbon in one of those three colours but I had zip! So what do you do when you want ribbon in a colour it doesn't come in? You die some ribbon! I decided to make my ribbon Delightful Dijon, so I took some Whisper White cotton ribbon and spritzed it with a mixture of rubbing alcohol and about 30 drops of Delightful Dijon reinker. The Stampin' Up! Stampin' Spritzers are just what you need to do this. They are very inexpensive and they work beautifully. Whenever I use one I keep the mixture in the spritzer and mark the colour in permanent marker on the tube so I know what colour is in it. The spritzers are so cheap you can afford a lot of them. The alcohol allows the ribbon to dry quickly and you can speed that up with the low setting on the Heat Tool. You can use the high setting very carefully, but it is not recommended as it can melt some types of ribbon.
  • I used the Kinda Eclectic Stamp Set for the leaves on the tag. I inked them up in Old Olive and then used Cajun Craze and Delightful Dijon Stampin' Write Markers to add some fall colours to them.
  • The sentiment is from A Little Something stamp set from the Holiday catalogue and I used markers as well to ink it up.

Well, that brings to a close our first week of the Holiday Catalogue. I hope my posts have been helpful for you, but there will be many more samples as the weeks go on, so I hope you will come back often and check them out! Have a great weekend. I'm looking forward to attending our local Provincial Exhibition and just enjoying the atmosphere of a Fall Fair! I'll take some photos!
