Tropical Chic for As You See It Challenges

It's a quick post today as I prepare for a big craft fair today at George Pringle Elementary School. 

It's one that I do each November and I hope you will join me there today from 1 pm to 7:30 pm if you live in the Okanagan area. There are 60 vendors and it's a good opportunity to get some Christmas gifts. I'll be featuring some cards and novelties as well as a few of my retired products and featuring some classes coming up in the near future, such as my Advent Calendar class to make this kit:

Meantime, it's an As You See It new Challenge Friday, and today, it's a colour challenge, splashed together by Design Team member, Jane Knudsen:

Here's my sample:

• I was definitely thinking tropical with these pure colours, so I got out my long neglected, but definitely loved Tropical Chic stamp set and inked up those pure primary type colours to create a jungle-like background.
• I added a little Crumb Cake as my neutral in the mix to soften the effect of those high-powered greens and blues.
• The Noble Peacock Specialty DSP and Foil Sheets both have Blueberry Bushel sheets in them so I made use of them for some shine on my card.
• And to balance that, some Braided Linen Trim for the tropical rustic look.
• The little bird with the bright colours isn't a parrot, but he's from the Free as a Bird stamp set and could be a bird from the tropics. Have you ever noticed how brightly coloured their plumage is compared to most North American birds? I stamped him in Blueberry Bushel and used a Blender Pen to move the ink from the outline to the middle as well as add other colours to the bird's breast.

In the Woods with Foil Accents

I feel like I shouldn't even be posting this here today, since it's a glorified CASe of this card by Cindy Elam, which I think I may like more than mine, but I do love the foil effects here and wanted to share them with you.

My process started out by wanting to use some more of my Noble Peacock Foil Sheets for Christmas Designs and I thought that the Old Olive Foil would be perfect for a die cut tree. I got out my In the Woods dies and die cut the 3D Christmas Tree out of the foil. Then I started to wonder how to properly display it and I wanted to also use the bare deciduous trees as well, in either white or foil. I knew they would look best on a dark background, but also wanted a snowy feel to the background. That's when I found Cindy's wonderful card on Pinterest.

So I rearranged the design, added the fir tree and made the snowy hills and black background bigger, but I used some of the great elements that I  admired so much from Cindy's design.

• Doesn't the Subtle 3D Embossing create a great frosty look in Silver Foil sheets when it's used as background for a winter scene? I thought so!
• Cindy cut her silver foil into a frame, but I just cut another sheet of Basic Black to glue over top of it. Before I did, though I embossed the sentiment, from Winter Woods stamp set, in Silver Stampin' Emboss Powder.
• I die cut 2 hills of snow from Whisper White cardstock using the edgelit that comes in the In The Woods dies. The 2 trees were die cut from the silver foil and one was tucked behind one of hills, while the other was adhered in front with glue dots.
• The Old Olive evergreen was added with Mini Stampin' Dimensionals on the back of each of the branches that pops out. That makes them stand out more.

Shiny Stars for As You See It Challenges

Could it be Friday again, so soon? It is and it's time for a new As You See It Challenge, this time a sketch challenge, #213!

It's funny because I had a really hard time coming up with a name for this week's challenge. I was trying to avoid anything to do with circles because I wanted people to have the freedom to substitute other shapes as well, but nothing was coming to my brain. I thought of cells splitting, I thought of Alien, with the ETBE bursting out of the human's belly, but that was just way too gross, I thought of a bird's eye view of a Victorian woman walking in her skirts, I thought of a fried egg, but none of those gave me a snappy title. Finally, I gave up and decided to call a circle a circle and settled on "A Circular Argument" since that's what I had with myself over it!

I, myself, wanted to use the Stitched Stars dies with some foil and the Brightly Gleaming DSP! I'd been thinking about that for forever. Here's how it turned out:

• The Stitched Stars Dies are just so amazing! You can do so much with them! You've got a whole set of nested stitched dies, you've got a variety of intricate die cut stars and inserts for the stars to make them ornate and you have that wonderful swirl of stars! What more could you want. I mounted some Copper Foil Sheet on some retired, but hoarded Multipurpose Adhesive Sheets, and die cut all the little fancy inserts for the large die cut star. That made them so much easier to adhere, just peel and stick. No adhesive mess on the foil!
• I used the Blueberry Bushel Noble Peacock Foil Sheet for the background foil and for the sentiment circle, which is die cut, after embossing with the White Stampin' Emboss Powder, with the Stitched Shapes dies.
• Embossing the sentiment on the foil turns out to have been the hardest step of the whole card. Even though I pretreated the foil with an Embossing Buddy, I still got excess white embossing powder around the sentiment that was unwanted and was hard to brush away.
• The sentiment and the stitched stars on top are all popped up on Dimensionals.
