Glad Tidings for Freshly Made Sketches

I know, I know! I should be showcasing all the great stuff I have from the new Occasions catalogue. Tomorrow, I promise. But when I saw the sketch for the Freshly Made Sketches Challenge 215, a Christmas design popped into my head and the idea intrigued me so much that I had to go with it. I wanted to do a bit of a take on Hark, the Herald Angels Sing bringing Glad Tidings of great joy!

Take a look at the simple sketch by Jen Mitchell for Freshly Made Sketches Challenge #215:

This weekend, we were down in Vancouver, seeing the stage production of It's a Wonderful Life, with some friends of ours. On the long drive home, I started designing my Monday blog post sample in my head. When I saw the sketch for FMS, I immediately thought of a medieval castle with the herald blowing the bugle or horn to announce the Christmas feast. I imagined rich purples and golds and here's what happened:

  • This looks fairly straightforward, but it wasn't. First I had to get three sizes of the banners to fit inside each other. I started out using the Banner Triple Punch, but I couldn't get the sizes I wanted so I went to the Banner Framelits, but even that required cutting the smallest one the same size as the middle one with the same framelit, and then trimming a bit off each side.
  • Then I had to find a stamp that looked regal and medieval enough but fit inside the smallest Whisper White banner. The Noel image from Antique Tags fit the bill perfectly.
  • I had to draw a trumpet or bugle or whatever they were called back then on the back of a piece of a Gold Foil Sheet and then fussy cut it carefully.
  • I made tassels from some Gold Cording Trim (I am going to really miss this stuff when it retires!) and that was a bit fiddly, but it really added to the look.
  • I originally stamped the Glad Tidings sentiment from Antique Tags on Rich Razzleberry and embossed it in Gold Stampin' Emboss powder, but it just didn't show up well enough. I didn't want to get rid of the Rich Razzleberry altogether, so I embossed the sentiment on a piece of Whisper White, punched it out as I did the original, with the Washi Label Punch, but then trimmed it right to the embossed line and glued it over the original sentiment on the  Rich Razzleberry, which formed a narrow border around the edges.

This is a photo from the play, It's a Wonderful Life, that we went to see at the Granville Island Stage, and I must confess, that even though I have seen this movie almost every Christmas in the last 10 years, this production had me crying like a baby at the ending. It was very well done, and here's the amazing part: the actor who played the lead role of George Bailey, was hospitalized with appendicitis last week and there was no understudy. They managed to get an actor who had played the role eight years ago (EIGHT YEARS) to take his place and he had to go onstage with little to no rehearsal. I would be absolutely terrified! He had to take the script on stage with him, which was completely understandable, but he was such a good actor that you forgot all about the script and got totally wrapped up in the production. The replacement actor was Todd Talbot who stars in Love It or List It Vancouver. I was very impressed by his skills!

While there we got in a quick visit with daughter Erin and her husband, Jonny, and our little grandson Wyatt, who is just a delight at 2 1/2 years old. He is talking a blue streak now and he has the biggest smile ever. As we left, he wanted a group hug, and laughed with delight when everyone snuggled together!

The Beauty of the Season for Pals Paper Arts

Brrr! It's cold here today. I think fall is about over and we are ready to plunge into full-blown winter! I have to keep on reminding myself that every season has it's own beauty, even winter, although I'm not sure I could tell you what it is. Winter is right on time though because we usually get our first snowfall right around Remembrance Day, which is tomorrow. It's a shame though because our leaves have just barely had time to change colour. We have the most gorgeous Pacific Sunset Maple tree right in front of our kitchen window. When it changes colour, it almost glows, it's so beautiful. I have a photo for you, but it really doesn't do it justice at all. The camera doesn't begin to catch the luminescence of those fall colours.

Well, over at Pals Paper Arts this week, they have a colour challenge that is definitely a fall palette. So perhaps this will be my salute to a wonderful autumn this year.  It was warm and dry and completely enjoyable.  I am using my Beauty of the Season Stamp set again because it is my Stamp Set of the Month for those of you in my Stamp of the Month On-Line Club.  More on that later in this post.

Here is a better look at my card:

  • I love the earthy tones in this colour challenge. They have an artistic quality to them that I love. They definitely belong together!
  • I also made use of my Work of Art stamp set to create some backgrounds for my image and sentiment, both from Beauty of the Season.
  • The Banners Framelits helped to create those perfectly shaped flags at the top of the page.
I don't want to give away too much about the card as it is one of the samples you will get if you sign up to be in my Stamp of the Month On-Line Club this month.  There are still some openings.  I will need you to join by November 15th - Saturday!

Each month, I will feature a different stamp set from the brand new Stampin' Up! Annual Catalogue. For $35 a month, every member will receive, in addition to the featured clear stamp set (or their choice of another of equal price if they already have the featured set or don't like it), three completed hand stamped cards using that stamp set, and three photo tutorials, complete with a list of materials needed and measurements so that you can duplicate these cards.  This will be for my Canadian customers only as I can't ship products to other countries due to Stampin' Up! regulations.

It's a great way to build up your supply of stamp sets plus get inspiration for making your own cards. You will also have private access to a special video tutorial channel for the occasional video tutorial using that set and access to a private Facebook group so that you can interact with other club members and myself.

November's Stamp Set of the Month is Beauty of the Season.

Smile!

Well, it was a weekend to smile! The Olympics in Sochi, Russia wrapped up and, as a Canadian, I couldn't be more proud of my country!  Under the slogan, #WE ARE WINTER!, Canadian athletes did very well, ranking third overall behind Russia and Norway, with 10 gold medals. This was not quite as good as the results from Vancouver 2010 Olympics, but because both of our hockey teams, men's and women's won Gold, we are all very happy!  Here's a quick montage of some memorable Canadian moments of the Winter Games:

The last photo is of Jennifer Jones, the skip of the Canadian Women's Curling Team who became the first women's team to go through to Olympic gold undefeated!

In honour of the games today, I created a card for Pals Paper Arts Challenge #192.  Here's the sketch:

And here's the card I came up with:

  • I guess I should have made it red and black, but Crisp Cantaloupe is such a favourite of mine that it's hard to resist.  I'm also enamoured with Sweet Sorbet DSP and Sweet Sorbet accessories.  I'm always reaching for them and they really make me smile!
  • The sketch is a simple one and I thought that the Happy Day stamp set would give a perfect but simple message for the design.
  • Not sure about the cork stickers from the Sweet Sorbet Accessories Pack, but once on, they won't come off, so there it is!  No, seriously, they are very cute and add a great touch to the card!
  • I used the Banners Framelits to cut the Basic Black flag.  I had originally layered a Summer Starfruit banner on top of it, but removed it because it competed with the main image due to it's brightness.
  • I picked up the Coastal Cabana in the DSP with a little Coastal Cabana coloured twine from the Sweet Sorbet Accessories Pack.
  • Both the Sweet Sorbet Designer Series Paper, and the Sweet Sorbet Accessories Pack can be earned free during Sale-A-Bration.  When you place a minimum $60 order (before tax and shipping), you can choose one item from the Sale-A-Bration brochure free!
How did your country do in the Winter Olympics?  Did you enjoy watching the athletes compete?  Let me know with a comment below.  I'd love to hear from you!
