Nine Lives for As You See It Theme Challenge

nine lives for aysi 1

We've always had pets in our lives, since I was about 12 years old and my grandparents brought a little cocker spaniel puppy to our house. Not sure if my parents were aware it was coming or not, but we kids were totally delighted! Not long afterward, we also acquired a kitten. My dad pretended to be grumpy about it, but it soon became apparent that not only had a truce developed between he and the cat, but they had somehow become best friends!

Since that time, I have never been without an animal in my life, usually a cat or two. Dogs are great, but require a bigger commitment than cats, so we usually opt for cats in our busyness. At present, we have two aging cats - Pickle and Beetle. They are sisters - totally opposite in every way and living side by side in enforced truce. They are actually getting too old for open warfare now so a little hiss or growl suffices when total indifference doesn't do the trick. But when some threat to our property presents itself, suddenly they become a united front - fearsome in their show of shared aggression!

All that to say, the As You See It Challenge this week is a great way to honour the pets in our lives this holiday season! They deserve a shout out after all they do for us!

as you see it challenge #264

To be completely honest, I didn't have any current stamps or DSP that were pet-themed. I had to raid my retired products stash for the Nine Lives stamp set which coordinates with the current Cat Punch. I also plundered my retired paper for my Playful Pets DSP. Here's how it turned out:

  • I used the colour scheme from the Designer Paper with Cinnamon Cider, Real Red, Flirty Flamingo and Basic Black. But for the cat, I went more realistic colours with Crumb Cake, Black and Early Espresso.
  • I used several die sets for this card: Stitched with Whimsy die for the background paper, Stitched Rectangles dies for the image panel and it's backing, and the Tasteful Labels dies for the sentiment.
  • I used some of the Frayed Grosgrain Ribbon from the Whimsy & Wonder Suite in the Jul/Dec Mini Catalogue for the little Blushing Bride Bow at the bottom.

I always love creating in shades of neutral. I find them very warm and comforting. I decided to try a Christmas card in neutral tones:

  • On an Early Espresso base I added an embossed sheet of Soft Suede using the Evergreen Forest 3D embossing folder.
  • I used the Evergreen Border Punch and punched out 3 borders of evergreen trees: one in Gray Granite cardstock; one in Very Vanilla cardstock; and one in Copper Brushed Metallic cardstock.
  • I arranged those in a staggered way on the card front to create depth. I used glue dots to attach the back two borders, but used black dimensionals for the front metallic border to increase the illusion of depth.
  • On a scalloped circular label die cut with the Tasteful Labels dies I embossed the one word sentiment Noel from the Tidings and Trimmings stamp set in Copper embossing powder. It is mounted with dimensionals over a layer of the Gold Shimmer Ribbon from the Blackberry Beauty suite and added little snippets of Early Espresso Faux Suede Trim and Gold Fine Art Ribbon.
