October's Newsletter Tutorial - Shattered Glass Technique

october's newsletter tutorial shattered glass

There is only one more day left in September, so naturally, I am working hard to get my October Newsletter out. With each month's free newsletter, comes a free photo tutorial, and this month's tutorial feature's the Shattered Glass technique, which is a spin on the inlaid die cut technique. Take a closer look at the card so you can see what I mean:

  • As you can see, I've used the Stitched Stars dies, one of only three that I have that would be suitable for this technique. But I also thought that since I was going for a holiday card, the Stitched Stars Dies would be better than butterflies and sunflowers!
  • The technique involves die cutting the shapes in several different cardstocks and specialty papers and saving all the little pieces that come out of the shapes that you've die cut. You insert some of these pieces back into one of the shapes, using a variety of the colours, and then leave a trail of some of the other shapes that look like they've fallen out of the die cut like shattered pieces of stained glass.
  • The sentiment is from the Toile Christmas stamp set and die cut with the Christmas Cardinal dies. It is embossed with Silver Stampin' Emboss Powder.
My photo tutorials are step-by-step instructions with photos illustrating each step. They include a list of materials and measurements. September's Paper Pumpkin Does Double Duty

sept paper pumpkin does double duty 1

I had two purposes in mind for my September Paper Pumpkin Kit! I haven't done a Kid's Class since the pandemic hit so I thought the treat holders would make a great project for kids to give to their best friends for Halloween. That will be a class coming up in October, so keep your eyes on my online events if you have kiddos! That will be limited attendance so you will have to register quickly once the class is open for registration.

The second project I had in mind was to make simple customer thank you cards using the left-overs from the treat holder projects and Whisper White Note Card & Envelopes.  I also added some leftover strips of Plaid Tidings 6x6 Designer Series Paper on some of them.

The treat holders are super cute! I think the kids will enjoy putting them together:

  • These adorable little pentagonal Halloween crackers are big enough to hold 3 or 4 Hersey kisses or a small chocolate bar. In order to have enough for a class, 2 of the bases come from the kit and 2 of them are made by me using the kit base as a template and covered with panels of Plaid Tidings 6x6 DSP.
  • The embellishments are all from the kit - lots of fun die cuts to use!

  • I managed to get 19 Thank You cards from the left overs supplies. Besides using strips of the Plaid Tidings DSP and the die cuts from the September Kit, I also stamped several pumpkins using the stamp from the set that came with the kit and coloured the images in using Stampin' Blends in Pumpkin Pie, Old Olive and Soft Suede.
  • I've just shown you a sample. Each card was different in some way, depending on which elements I used and how I arranged them.
If you like what you see, Paper Pumpkin kits are always a good value. The next kit is a holiday themed one. To get it you need to subscribe by Oct. 10, by clicking HERE.

Keep on the look out in my Online Classes for the Kid's Halloween Class coming up in October.

Stitching the Stars for As You See It Challenges

stitching the stars for aysi challenges 1

Friday brings with it a new As You See It Challenge, and this week it is a Theme Challenge. The theme is Sewing and Stitching. Here is the theme banner:

I found this one a bit difficult because I felt I was limited to stitched dies, not having any sewing stamp sets available. Because I am working on some Christmas designs for a Christmas Card Online Class, I decided to use my Stitched Stars dies for this one! (It's a really beautiful and versatile die set, if you don't already have it.) And then, like a bolt of lightening, I thought, "What if I could actually stitch in the die cut stitched holes?" Here's where that line of thinking got me - well, at least partially:

  • I die cut the watercolour looking Snowflake Splendour DSP with the Stitched Rectangles Dies for the background and mounted it on Silver Foil Sheet and then on Bermuda Bay cardstock.
  • I die cut the star flourish from the Balmy Blue Glimmer Paper and added it to the top left of the card using small dots of liquid glue.
  • I die cut the largest and smallest stitched stars from the center of the Silver Foil sheet to save paper. With a very small needle, I started to actually stitch some Silver Metallic Thread through the holes in the largest silver star, then left the needle and loose thread  to mount on the card front after adhering the foil star.
  • The other two stars are die cut from a piece of Plaid Tidings Designer Series Paper and some Coastal Cabana cardstock.
  • The sentiment is from the Itty Bitty Christmas stamp set and is stamped in Bermuda Bay ink and die cut using the Stitched Rectangles Dies.
