Stitching the Stars for As You See It Challenges

stitching the stars for aysi challenges 1

Friday brings with it a new As You See It Challenge, and this week it is a Theme Challenge. The theme is Sewing and Stitching. Here is the theme banner:

I found this one a bit difficult because I felt I was limited to stitched dies, not having any sewing stamp sets available. Because I am working on some Christmas designs for a Christmas Card Online Class, I decided to use my Stitched Stars dies for this one! (It's a really beautiful and versatile die set, if you don't already have it.) And then, like a bolt of lightening, I thought, "What if I could actually stitch in the die cut stitched holes?" Here's where that line of thinking got me - well, at least partially:

  • I die cut the watercolour looking Snowflake Splendour DSP with the Stitched Rectangles Dies for the background and mounted it on Silver Foil Sheet and then on Bermuda Bay cardstock.
  • I die cut the star flourish from the Balmy Blue Glimmer Paper and added it to the top left of the card using small dots of liquid glue.
  • I die cut the largest and smallest stitched stars from the center of the Silver Foil sheet to save paper. With a very small needle, I started to actually stitch some Silver Metallic Thread through the holes in the largest silver star, then left the needle and loose thread  to mount on the card front after adhering the foil star.
  • The other two stars are die cut from a piece of Plaid Tidings Designer Series Paper and some Coastal Cabana cardstock.
  • The sentiment is from the Itty Bitty Christmas stamp set and is stamped in Bermuda Bay ink and die cut using the Stitched Rectangles Dies.

Second August 2020 Paper Pumpkin Extension

second august 2020 paper pumpkin extension 1

This second example of an extension of the August 2020 Paper Pumpkin Kit, entitled World's Greatest, makes a great masculine card! This would be great for a male teacher, a son, a husband, brother or how about another hero like a male fire fighter on the front lines of all the West Coast fires in the US, or a paramedic. But I wouldn't mind this design either, as it's so cheery, so it would be great for any gender.

  • I started with Granny Apple Green cardstock as the base and that's what picks the project up and give it its cheery look!
  • On top of that I added another design of the Plaid Tidings 6 x 6 Designer Series Paper. This design has various shades of blue and green and ends up looking teal in the end, but it works well with both the Granny Apple Green and the Pacific Point ink and ribbon from the kit.
  • I had the award circle die cut from the kit and the small circle with You're the Best stamped on it as well as enough ribbon to make two tails for the award ribbon left over from the kit. I didn't have any gold foil left.
  • I die cut, from Gold Foil Sheets, a scallop circle using the Layering Circle dies, and from the Tasteful Label dies, two flags and a stitched scallop circle.
  • The flags were adhered on to the ribbons.
  • I had to fussy cut the award circle ribbon topper so it wouldn't be too big for the die cut gold foil scallop circle. Then I glued it to the foil background.
  • The ribbons attach to the back of this with some Seal+ adhesive. The smaller stitched gold foil scallop circle goes in the middle of the award circle ribbon topper and the small circle die cut goes in the middle of that.
  • This award ribbon is adhered to the top of the card and some of the sequins are added with a teeny drop of Liquid Multipurpose Glue each. The Take Your Pick Tool is great for doing this.

August Paper Pumpkin Extension

august paper pumpkin extension 1

How is your child's teacher coping with school start up amid COVID regulations? I'm sure that it's been crazy for him or her, trying to figure out the physical distancing and sanitizing and keeping kids from doing what they do that would spread the virus, along with all the regular hard work of starting a new class and establishing expectations and managing curriculum! How much do they get in the way of PPE, with kids coughing and sneezing on them? They probably deserve an award! You can show your appreciation to them with a card like this one that I made with the remnants of my August 2020 Paper Pumpkin kit!

august paper pumpkin extension 2

  • I started with a card base of Rich Razzleberry and added a piece of  Rich Razzleberry plaid DSP from the Plaid Tidings 6 x 6 Designer Series Paper over a matte of Gold Foil Sheet.
  • On one of the large rectangular panels from the kit, I stamped the ribbon for the medal in Rich Razzleberry ink. It's a DistINKtive stamp so you get all the texture and shadow from just one stamping.
  • I used one of the vellum sprigs of foliage to add to the right of this panel, using glue dots from the kit to attach it as they are slimmer than our regular glue dots and less likely to show.
  • I stamped the #1 from the "World's Greatest" stamp set that comes with the Paper Pumpkin kit, in Rich Razzleberry ink on one of the smaller circle die cuts from the kit and adhered it to a Gold Foil Circle die cut from the Tasteful Label Dies. These were added to the bottom of the ribbon.
  • Lastly, I stamped the TEACHER sentiment from the World's Greatest stamp set on to one of the small rectangle die cuts from the kit, in Rich Razzleberry ink again and mount it on a Gold Foil flag die cut using one of the Tasteful Labels dies. This is added to the card front at the bottom right.
You end up with an elegant looking card good enough to express your appreciation to the teacher charged with looking after your child's health, welfare and education at school this crazy year - and you know how hard that is after trying to do it for 7 months!

Extended Z Fold Card with the Gilded Autumn Suite

extended z fold with gilded autumn suite

As I continue to design for my September Online Technique Class, I have to say that I am totally in love with this Gilded Autumn Specialty Designer Series Paper. The colours and designs along with the metallic foiling are just exquisite and bring fall to life so well.

Here is the palette we're talking about:

I also wanted a technique to work with and teach the class, so I picked an extended Z Fold card, which uses a heavy weight of DSP to lengthen the folds in a regular Z Fold card to give you something with more space, but which still fits in a regular sized envelope for a 5 1/2" x 4 1/4" card. I watched Meg Loven's great tutorial on this fancy fold and used the basic construction, then went my own way. Thanks, Meg!

For this card, I also made use of the Brushed Metallic cardstock that is part of the same Gilded Autumn Suite, the Plaid Tidings 6"X6" DSP found on page 57 of the Aug/Dec Mini Catalogue and both the Autumn Essentials and Gathered Leaves Dies.

Take a closer look at the card that will be the second sample for the class that will take place through Facebook Live/YouTube on Sept. 15th.
