I'm Here for You with Artfully Aware

At OnStage in Orlando, I can remember being very moved by Million Dollar Sales Achiever Janet Wakeland's presentation of her inspiration stamp set, Artfully Aware. Her mother struggles with Alzheimer's and it affects the whole family and they have to support each other to get through the tragedy of it. I love the style of sketched images because they convey very strong emotions with just a few lines and you can use them many different ways. You can colour them in, leave them white and fill in the background, or stamp them right on a watercolour wash as I did in this card. Whichever you do, the strength of the lines works to give you the same powerful message.

I used Balmy Blue and Highland Heather in my watercolour wash, colours which I seem to be turning to a lot lately.

  • My background DSP is from the Botanical Butterfly Designer Series Paper, a Sale-A-Bration reward. The DSP in front is from the Tranquil Textures Designer Series Paper in the Annual Catalogue. I created a frame for my watercoloured image by cutting an oval in the DSP using one of the Layering Oval Framelits.
  • After layering on Balmy Blue ink and Highland Heather and a bit of Gorgeous Grape using an Aqua Painter on Watercolour Paper, I used the Stamparatus to stamp the image with Memento Tuxedo Black ink. I know that it takes a few times stamping on Watercolour Paper to get a dark enough image with the Memento ink and with the Stamparatus , this poses no problem, because you stamp exactly in the same spot each time.
  • The sentiment I chose from the Artfully Aware stamp set has special meaning for me, which I'll explain below. Again, I used the Stamparatus to stamp that a couple of times to get it dark enough.
  • I apologize for using the Organdy Ribbon for my bow, but it's the only one that's the right colour. Unfortunately, demand for the Organdy Ribbon Combo Pack as a Sale-A-Bration reward has been so high that it is not available to choose right now. You should be able to order it again in the beginning of March. A few pearls finish off the look.
I wanted to share with you a bit about why I chose that particular sentiment and why Janet's presentation was so moving to me. During the first half of my life, tragedy was no stranger to me and I got through it, like the rest of my family, by leaning on each other. When I was 13 years old, my younger brother, who was 11, was killed in an accident. This was a very traumatic event for my family, and we all coped with it in different ways. Back then, there was no counselling for children to help them deal with these things. In fact, our parents were so devastated that they could barely function themselves, let alone see what was happening with us children. They didn't know for example, that my younger sister blamed herself for years for his death because he had asked her to do his paper route that day and she had declined. They didn't know that I refused to believe that he was really dead, that there had been a big mistake, and I just pretended he was still alive and "talked to him" in my head for months. But I know that we instinctively sought each other out for comfort and support, and I think we have a stronger bond today because of that time.

Just 10 years later, my mother passed away from breast cancer, and we were still in our late teens and early twenties. It was a long difficult decline and we cared for her at home until the end, and again, my dad was lost without her, and we ended up being his caretaker in a lot of ways before he remarried a couple of years later. But we didn't know how to deal with grief, and each of us had our own way of coping, but we had each other and our faith.

Finally, my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's as well many years later and suffered for 10 years before he finally passed away, so I understand the pain of watching the parent you once knew slowly disappear to become an empty shell.

So, I am well-acquainted with grief and tragedy, but we all deal with it in our lives at some stage or another, and I have to say that those difficult times were nonetheless some of the most meaningful times in my life, and the times I grew closest to my family and to God. Life was real and the struggle was what made it real! This image summed it up for me:

Sea of Textures for Freshly Made Sketches and Double PCC Points

Happy Monday to you! I had fun this weekend visiting my youngest daughter and watching her perform in Grease in a local theatre production in her town.

Now, I am back, ready to face the whirlwind that is the last week of the old Annual Catalogue and the first week of the New Annual Catalogue. Have you got your wishlist ready? Do you even have your catalogue yet? The first batch went out with the early May orders, but let me know if you would like one and I'll see that you get one as soon as I can. Or you could come to my Catalogue Launch on June 9th and pick up one then.

Freshly Made Sketches had a unique sketch this week for their challenge:

Wanting to try out some more of my new stamp sets, I thought that the Sea of Textures Stamp Set* would be perfect for the vertical elements of this sketch! Here's how it turned out:

  • I'm a pushover for anything remotely nautical or beachy, so this Sea of Textures* set is right up my alley! And throw in some unique texture stamps and I'm "hooked"!  The long strands of seaweed were perfect for the vertical pieces in this design and I used some old and some new "sea colours" together! My goodness, we have some beautiful blues, greens and teals in our collection. I used the new Soft Seafoam* and Mint Macaron*, plus the old Island Indigo, Lemon Lime Twist and Tranquil Tide and they all look amazing together here!
  • The background paper is from the new Tranquil Textures Designer Series Paper* which features not only some of those amazing colours, but also some great textures, not just for sea designs. Some are generic enough to use for many different themes. I used one of the designs here.
  • The sentiment is from this Sea of Textures stamp set* as well, with one of the fish skin-like textures stamped off in the background of it. It's diecut using one of my retired old favourites, the Project Life Cards and Labels Framelits.
  • I added some starfish and a clam shell from the retiring Seaside Shore stamp set. Do you have that one? If you want it, I will be submitting my last order tomorrow so contact me before then. I used some 1/4" Copper Trim, opened out like a fish net as the final embellishment.

Welcome to Canada Envelope Card

I don't know if you are aware, but I've been part of a group at our church who has been working to sponsor a Syrian refugee family to come to Canada. It has been two long years of paperwork and fundraising of all kinds, but last Thursday all our efforts came to fruition when our Syrian friends walked down the airport arrivals ramp into our hearts.  This is a photo of the tired, but happy family here!

It's been an interesting few days, as our Arabic is nil and their English is very limited and Google Translate is very flawed, sometimes in hilarious ways, but we are somehow able to communicate with each other and have gotten to know each other much better!

We made signs to welcome them at the airport, waved Canadian flags, had bouquets of flowers and other gifts for the family, but we wanted a card for all the team to sign, even if they all couldn't be at the airport to greet them. I needed to make a card with lots of room for signatures!!

Luckily, Ronda Wade  had recently done a Facebook live video on making an envelope card that suited my needs perfectly, so I set out to make my own version - a Welcome to Canada card.

  • Of course, I wanted Real Red as one of the colours, and remembered that Crumb Cake is always a good neutral to use with red. The background DSP is from the new Tranquil Textures Designer Series Paper* and it was the perfect subdued pattern to use.
  • My favourite new stamp set, Rooted in Nature*, was again perfect to use for a Canada theme with the stump image in Crumb Cake, stamped off, and the tree in Tranquil Tide.
  • The sentiments are concocted from Special Celebrations stamp set. I used the Welcome Baby, but masked the Baby so as just to use the Welcome part. I used Thoughtful Banners for the From Us at the bottom. And TO CANADA was made using a brand new set called Pick a Pennant*. It has an alphabet with more than one of the most used letters so that you can create most words on your clear mount block or Stamparatus without having to fill in letters or stamp twice. Unfortunately, there are only 2 As in the set and Canada has 3 so I still had to fill in the last one.
*New products from the 2018/19 Stampin' Up! Annual Catalogue available to purchase starting June 1, 2018.

But the special part of this card comes when you untie the Crumb Cake Classic Weave ribbon:

The two Whisper White envelopes that are the pockets containing the secret message cards!!

Which I have pulled out here in this photo. They are ready for words of welcome and signatures!

This is the last page with more images from Rooted in Nature* and sentiments from the Waterfront stamp set, which is being carried over into the new Annual Catalogue.

*New products from the 2018/19 Stampin' Up! Annual Catalogue available to purchase starting June 1, 2018.

In the end, everyone loved the card, both givers and receivers, and the Syrian family will appreciate it even more once they learn to read English I'm sure!

Are there some products in the Annual Catalogue that you've had your eye on for some time now, but just haven't gotten around to ordering?? Well, if they are on the retiring list, you only have 8 days left to do it! I will be putting in an order before May 31st so call me with your last minute wishes!
Don't let this be you:

Procrastination!!
