Welcome to Canada Envelope Card

I don't know if you are aware, but I've been part of a group at our church who has been working to sponsor a Syrian refugee family to come to Canada. It has been two long years of paperwork and fundraising of all kinds, but last Thursday all our efforts came to fruition when our Syrian friends walked down the airport arrivals ramp into our hearts.  This is a photo of the tired, but happy family here!

It's been an interesting few days, as our Arabic is nil and their English is very limited and Google Translate is very flawed, sometimes in hilarious ways, but we are somehow able to communicate with each other and have gotten to know each other much better!

We made signs to welcome them at the airport, waved Canadian flags, had bouquets of flowers and other gifts for the family, but we wanted a card for all the team to sign, even if they all couldn't be at the airport to greet them. I needed to make a card with lots of room for signatures!!

Luckily, Ronda Wade  had recently done a Facebook live video on making an envelope card that suited my needs perfectly, so I set out to make my own version - a Welcome to Canada card.

  • Of course, I wanted Real Red as one of the colours, and remembered that Crumb Cake is always a good neutral to use with red. The background DSP is from the new Tranquil Textures Designer Series Paper* and it was the perfect subdued pattern to use.
  • My favourite new stamp set, Rooted in Nature*, was again perfect to use for a Canada theme with the stump image in Crumb Cake, stamped off, and the tree in Tranquil Tide.
  • The sentiments are concocted from Special Celebrations stamp set. I used the Welcome Baby, but masked the Baby so as just to use the Welcome part. I used Thoughtful Banners for the From Us at the bottom. And TO CANADA was made using a brand new set called Pick a Pennant*. It has an alphabet with more than one of the most used letters so that you can create most words on your clear mount block or Stamparatus without having to fill in letters or stamp twice. Unfortunately, there are only 2 As in the set and Canada has 3 so I still had to fill in the last one.

But the special part of this card comes when you untie the Crumb Cake Classic Weave ribbon:

The two Whisper White envelopes that are the pockets containing the secret message cards!!

Which I have pulled out here in this photo. They are ready for words of welcome and signatures!

This is the last page with more images from Rooted in Nature* and sentiments from the Waterfront stamp set, which is being carried over into the new Annual Catalogue.

In the end, everyone loved the card, both givers and receivers, and the Syrian family will appreciate it even more once they learn to read English I'm sure!
