Shades of Grey Speed Stamping for As You See It Challenge

It's an As You See It Friday, and time for another new challenge from Amanda! This week is one of my most scary challenges - Speed Stamping - but exhilarating in an adrenaline rush  kind of way. Your colour choices are all taken care of because it's supposed to be monochromatic in different shades of grey!

I got a big chuckle out of the Challenge #175 banner! I laughed because we used to joke that in Stampin' Up! we had 50 Shades of Cardstock, but for this challenge we're only using greys. We can't make that joke anymore after June 1st, because then, due to the colour revamp we will officially have 53 Shades of Cardstock and the joke loses its punch!

These will be the 40 families, plus 10 In Colours, plus 3 Basics - Whisper White, Basic Black, and Very Vanilla.

But back to the challenge. The rules for Speed Stamping are as follows:
  • You can come up with your design and gather materials before you start the clock, but once you start work, you have to complete your project in 10 min.
  • Use only shades of grey and other neutrals in your project.
Here's how mine turned out:

  • It took me just under ten minutes, 9m55sec, to complete the card. I had to abort an attempt at emboss resist with the sentiment on the tree trunk cross section, because it just didn't turn out clear enough.
  • I used the Rooted in Nature Stamp Set* for the images. I really love those veiny, delicate leaves. They make a great background, and I love the way you can overlap them and they look see through. I was going to make the background panel a banner, but ran out of time to make the flagged end, so just had to throw it on the card base as is.
  • My original plan was to emboss the sentiment, also from Rooted in Nature*, in Clear Stampin' Emboss Powder on some Whisper White cardstock and then stamp the tree trunk cross section in Basic Gray Archival**, but that ink did not work well for an emboss resist, so I ditched that one and, instead, stamped the tree trunk in Sahara Sand and the sentiment over top in Basic Gray Archival**. I like the look of the second so much better, but it did cost me time.
  • The third layer of the card is the new neutral colour, Gray Granite*. I was glad I had it in time for this challenge!

Why don't you give Speed Stamping a try and enter our challenge this weekend? It can be challenging and a bit nerve-wracking, but it's also a lot of fun, and it's amazing what you can create in that time! Share it with the world!

Have a great weekend!
