There's Snow Place Like Snow Place

Are you looking for a light-hearted and whimsical stamp set for your Christmas and winter greetings? Look no further than the Snow Place stamp set and Snow Friends Framelit Dies! They come in a bundle and you can have no end of fun with them. Remember playing with paper dolls? This bundle will afford you the same pleasures!

I loved the dolls from McCall's magazine, but I do remember getting very frustrated when the clothes wouldn't stay on. Now we have Glue Dots, although once on, you wouldn't get the clothes off again and that defeats the whole purpose! Sigh!

Does anyone else remember playing with these?

Let's take a look at some of the features on my card design:

  • The snowman and the penguin from the Snow Place stamp set have no end of accessories and you're seeing just a few of them here. The great thing is: from scarves to hats and even to buttons, all the elements have matching framelits so there is no fussy cutting involved! Yay, Stampin' Up!
  • I first sponged the bottom snow drifts using Pool Party and Tempting Turquoise ink and Stamping Sponges. I then stamped the flourish from Everything Eleanor in Versamark and added White Stampin' Emboss Powder WITHOUT using the Embossing Buddy first. I wanted some embossing powder residue to end up on my snowbanks, which were still wet enough to attract it. I heat embossed everything with the Heat Tool. Then I sponged more Pool Party and Tempting Turquoise in the top area. The flourish represents the cold winter wind, and I got the idea from several of Michelle Zindorf's designs.
  • The sentiment is also from Snow Place and I used the Washi Label Punch for the panel. The sentiment was too long to fit the punch as it is normally used. I trimmed the width of the panel to just slightly narrower than the width of the label punch and then I was able to pass one end of the panel at a time into the punch from the bottom and I cut each end separately. For the Real Red panel behind, I simply punched it normally and then cut it in half and glued each end on to the end of the sentiment.

Winter Joy for The Paper Players and The Colour Throwdown

I really enjoyed making this card for The Paper Players Challenge #223 and The Colour Throwdown Swatch Challenge #320. It kind of exudes a quiet Joy! The best kind, in my humble opinion. This could be a Christmas card, but it could also be a winter all occasion or birthday card, any occasion that merits joy! I've been wanting to use the word framelits from the Wonderful Wreath Framelits for a long time now. This was the perfect layout for it.

And I've been loving the Soft Sky, Real Red and Whisper White palette, so adding some Crumb Cake was a natural.

  • On the Crumb Cake card base, I added a background panel of All is Calm Specialty Designer Series Paper in Soft Sky. On to that, I added a small panel of some Nordic Noel DSP backed by Real Red cardstock.
  • I added a 1" wide piece of Red Glimmer paper to the top for some pizzazz, under which I placed two flags, one in Soft Sky and one in Real Red.
  • I used the "Joy" Framelit and cut one out in Soft Sky cardstock and one in Crumb Cake. When using these Thinlits or Framelits, be sure to place some waxed paper between the cardstock and the die.  It makes removing the cardstock from them so much easier!  I glued the Soft Sky Joy to the Crumb Cake Joy, offsetting them a bit for a shadow effect and so that the word would show up better on the Soft Sky background. The 2 Way Glue Pen is fabulous for gluing these thin lines on something. It works just like a pen. I used glue dots to attach it to the card,
  • A Neutral Designer button with a little bow made from Soft Sky 1/8" Taffeta Ribbon is the perfect finishing touch. I tied the bow and then used a glue dot to attach it to the button rather than threading it through.  Glue dots are very effective in adhering something like the button to the Red Glimmer Paper.

White on White Frosty for The Paper Players

Over at The Paper Players this week, they have a White on White Challenge going and I was challenged because I have not had great results with this kind of project in the past, creating and photographing!  But I like to push my limits, so I gave it a try!

A few years ago we had neighbours that were a lot of fun!  When the kids were smaller, we would often have spontaneous water fights with water guns and hoses, using lawn furniture as shields!  In the winter, it would be snowball fights and kringling (leaving a box of Christmas surprises on the porch, ringing the bell and running away!)  But we figure we outdid them one winter.  We had a late afternoon snowstorm and the neighbours were downstairs in their entertainment room watching a movie.  We had to act fast.  We built a snowman right by their back door with an outstretched twig arm and hand touching the doorbell.  Then we rang the doorbell and ran.  We barely made it to our door, when we heard them open the back door, gasp, then shout with peals of laughter!  Although we denied our involvement, I'm sure they guessed it was us!

In honour of that memory, I created Frosty, a punch art snowman.  He's a dapper gent with top hat, cravat, vest and pocket watch.  Let me introduce you.

  • This card was created without the help of any stamps. I simply punched or die cut shapes and added some texture through embossing with the Woodgrain Embossing Folder.
  • The three circles that form the body and head are made from the 2 1/2" Circle Punch, the 1 3/4" Circle Punch and the 1 3/8" Circle Punch.
  • I sketched (on the back) and cut free-hand the hat and all its pieces, the carrot nose, the watch pocket on the vest and the snow hills.
  • The scarf is made with one of the Bitty Banners framelits with one of the flagged ends cut off.
  • The eyes and the buttons are from the Owl Builder Punch and the Cupcake Builder Punch.  To make the watch chain, I punched half a circle with the 1/2" Circle Punch, then I punched over it with the 3/4" Circle Punch.  Using the smaller one first makes it much easier to see the width you're punching.
  • The vest is a 1 3/4" circle which is repunched twice with the same punch to get the side ovals.
  • You might be able to see that I embossed cheeks for the snowdude by using my Simply Scored Stylus and the Stampin' Pierce Mat to gently push out, using a circular motion the area where the cheeks and mouth would be.  The mouth didn't show up well though, so I used a Basic Grey marker to highlight it.
  • The Typeset Alphabet Dies created the letters, cut out of coaster board and Silver Glimmer Paper, mounted together to create some dimension.
Thanks for your visit today!  Join me tomorrow for some more sneak peeks at the new Occasions catalogue.
