Watercolour Die Cuts for Frosted Frames

I've done a lot of Christmas/winter cards now using the Feels Like Frost suite and particularly, the Frosted Foliage dies, but I wanted to show how versatile they were and create a fall look with them. I also needed a last sample for my Watercolour Variety Technique class and I thought of having a watercoloured die cut, either words or a frame! The two purposes melded quite nicely into this project:

  • My first step was to take a large 4" x 41/2" piece of Shimmery White cardstock (which is great for watercolouring, unlike Whisper White), and watercolour it in areas with Poppy Parade, Mango Melody, Pumpkin Pie, and Granny Apple Green, fall-like colours. I used an Aqua Painter for this, and squeezed the Classic Stampin' Pads to get some ink in the lids of the pads to pick up with the Aqua painter to do this.
  • After applying each colour, I dried the paper using the Heat Tool. Then I applied the next colour.
  • I arranged the Frosted Frames die where I wanted on this painted cardstock, eliminating part of the snowflake at the bottom, which then just looks like another type of foliage, and die cut it.
  • In the left over bits I die cut the smaller foliage dies. I used these to tuck under or to adorn the sentiment layer.
  • The sentiment is from Rooted in Nature and is stamped in Early Espresso ink and die cut with the center stitched label die that coordinates with the frosted foliage frame.
  • It's really hard to tell from the photo, but the Early Espresso background is embossed using the Subtles 3D Embossing folder. The card base is Mango Melody.

Starting Nov. 1, you will be able to order from this amazingly gorgeous Christmastime is Here Suite. I just received my preorder of it, which you could get in your started kit if you signed up to be a demonstrator in October, or you could wait until Nov. 1, as a customer. I've seen some amazing stuff on Pinterest with it and I can hardly wait to make some samples to show you!

More Watercolour Technique Backgrounds for As You See It Challenge #170!

I promised you Wednesday that I would show you how I put those watercolour technique backgrounds I experimented with here to use in cards, so I am showing you one today as my Design Team sample for As You See It Challenge #170 entitled Bits and Pieces. Here is the Challenge Banner:

My card kind of evolved from the background. When I trimmed it down and looked at it, I saw the slowly swirling waters of a deep, secret pond, and since we have a pond in our backyard, that made me think of water lilies and dragonflies, and...well... you can see how things went from there:

  • The colour palette of Emerald Envy, Dapper Denim and Bermuda Bay with Silver came from the background colours that I used, and they happen to be good ones for dragonflies as well.

  • The Dragonfly Dreams stamp set provided the dragonfly two-step stamping images and the sun sparkles on the water. I used my Stamparatus for the dragonfly, giving me a nice, clear image that was perfectly matched up (love that tool!) and I embossed the sun sparkles in Silver Stampin' Emboss Powder on the background panel.
  • The Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits have an outline framelit for the dragonfly that lets you just die cut the medium dragonfly image.

  • The water lily was actually made using the Daisy punch - 3 layers of Thick Whisper White Cardstock, put together with Glue Dots and having the edges of the petals of the top two layers curled up for emphasis. A Clear Faceted Gem forms the center.
  • The second largest Stitched Shape Square Framelit forms the square from the sketch and the sentiment is embossed on it with silver. The sentiment is from the Cake Soiree stamp set from the Occasions Catalogue.
