Black Ice Technique with Beautiful You for FMS327

Lately, I've been fascinated with another of Melissa Kerman's brilliant techniques called the Black Ice technique! (Melissa was the one who developed the Tarnished Foil technique as well.) Since I'm doing a technique class this week using new background techniques, I thought this would be a great one to feature. When looking for a stamp set to use, I spotted Beautiful You almost immediately, especially the figure with the umbrella. I thought this technique created the perfect rainstorm effect, and, along with the sentiment I used from the same stamp set, would make a great "thinking of you" kind of card, something I need more of.

The layout came roughly from the latest Freshly Made Sketches Challenge #327 here:

The Black Ice panel is what I'm using for the star element that can be any shape, but it is a bit large, just because you need something larger to really see the effect properly. Take a closer look:

  • Watching Melissa do it, you'd think the Black Ice Technique was a breeze, but it's not. This is the third panel that I completed in an attempt to get one I was satisfied with. I also tried it on two types of foil, Silver Foil Sheets and Champagne Foil Sheets. I chose the Champagne in the end because it was a little warmer, and not quite so stark looking for a "thinking of you" type card. However, in the process, I think I learned enough tricks to make it easier for my classes this week.
  • The card base and front panel backing are Fresh Fig cardstock, a colour that seems to complement the Champagne Foil really well.
  • I used the Petal Passion Designer Series Paper as a background. I cut two 4" x 5 1/4" panels and then flipped one over to cut the base off at an angle as you see above. I then glued it on to the first panel and covered the seam with some Berry Burst Metallic-Edged Ribbon.
  • Briefly, the Black Ice Technique consists of first pulling an Archival Basic Black Ink Pad down the foil  and up the foil to get the edges and a few black streaks. Then you stamp your image(s) and dry the black ink with a Heat Tool. After that you VERY LIGHTLY drag a Versamark ink pad down over the entire foil piece, add Clear Stampin' Emboss Powder and set it with a Heat Tool.
  • I added three of the Glitter and Clear Epoxy shapes in the form of raindrops as appropriate accents on the front panel.
