Let's Get Spooky with Graveyard Gate Bundle for As You See It Challenge

Probably once or twice a year, I give a nod to Halloween and go all out with a scary card, and since As You See It Challenge has a Scary Theme Challenge out today, and since I'm on the Design Team, I thought that this would be the best time to go big and pull out my Graveyard Gate Bundle! And, it just so happens that my friends over at The Paper Players are also have a SPOOKY theme challenge this week:

Now, theirs is a Clean and Simple challenge, which my card definitely isn't, so I don't know if I qualify, but what the heck! 

Take a really close look at this card because there are so many details inside it that it will take a lot of looking to see everything:

• This happens to be a reverse Center Step card, where you step the center panel, not the outside edges. I wanted to create depth for the graveyard in front of which to put the gate.  To accomplish that I cut a 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" piece of cardstock down both long sides 3/4" from the edge from 1" to 7 1/2".  Then I scored across all pieces at 4 1/4" and just across the center panel at 1", 2", 3 1/2", (already scored at 4 1/4"), 5", 6 1/2", and 7 1/2". Fold those in mountain/valley folds consecutively all along. This gives you some steps to add the gravestones and backdrop to. On the back step, adhere a 4" x 5 1/2" piece of cardstock to serve as the backdrop.

• I sponged a piece of 4" x 4" Whisper White cardstock, masking a circle to create the moon and using Lemon Lime Twist, Old Olive, Elegant Eggplant and Basic Gray ink to do the sponging. After I removed the mask, I added some Lemon Lime Twist to the Moon and used a straight edged mask to make a couple of sponged wisps of clouds with Basic Gray. I stamped on some bats from the Graveyard Gate stamp set using Basic Black ink and created some branches from the sprigs from the Everyday Jars Framelits. I just trimmed away parts of the nice rounded buds to make them more jagged and added them to the back drop.
• I stamped several of the different gravestones on Basic Gray cardstock and fussy cut them to add to them to the steps in the center of the card.
• I stamped the brick pillars in Basic Gray on Whisper White and fussy cut them. They are too short for the gate so I stamped two for each side and overlapped them to make them the right size.
• Using the Precision Base Plate with my Big Shot, I die cut the Detailed Gate Thinlit from Basic Black cardstock and glued it on each side of the card so the gate spanned the front of the card. I die cut the lock and key from Silver Foil Sheet and added it to the gate.

Detailed Gate Thinlits for Freshly Made Sketches

I just got home yesterday from a trip to Vancouver for Bard on the Beach, where we saw Much Ado About Nothing, set in 1957 on an Italian film set. It was so much fun! We got some sight seeing in - Barclay Square in Vancouver, the Maritime Museum. We saw Despicable Me 3 and had some great meals, the last one at Cactus Club on English Bay overlooking the beach and the bay. I got home yesterday afternoon and had just enough time to make a card for the post today. I decided to play along with two challenges today.

I learned some really neat uses for the Detailed Gate Thinlits from Janet Wakeland and thought that they would work well with the challenges I choose to play with.

• Janet Wakeland shares some awesome ideas about how to use the Halloween thinlit, Detailed Gate, all year round to make it one of your most versatile die sets ever! I used one of her ideas in this card, cutting the gate up into smaller pieces to add some ornate details to my card. Here you can see the fancy top of the gate above the sentiment and one of the horizontal panels of the gate below and under the sentiment. It's great the way these pieces coordinate with the snowflake dies from Seasonal Layers Thinlits, as you can see here.
• I had a blast creating the background for this card. I took a piece of Shimmery White cardstock and sponged it with areas of Lemon Lime Twist, Pear Pizzazz, Pool Party, Bermuda Bay and Dapper Denim. I also went over some areas on the top with some sponged White Craft Ink, which smoothed and blended the colours really well, and left some cloud-like effects, though very subtly.
• I spritzed the back ground with water and dried it with the Heat Tool to get the mottled effect in the background. It helps create the illusion of a snowy day.

• All the die cuts were cut from Whisper White cardstock that was backed first with the Multipurpose Adhesive Sheets. After die cutting, all I needed to do was to remove the backing and I had a sticker that I could easily adhere to the card front without worrying about trying to get adhesive on the tiny areas without it messing up the rest of the project if I needed to move the piece a little.
• The sentiment is from the Musical Season Stamp Set. I inked it up with Stampin' Write Markers in Lemon Lime Twist, Pear Pizzazz, Bermuda Bay and Dapper Denim before stamping the image. I die cut it with a framelit from the retired set, Project Life Cards and Labels Framelits. After trimming it down, I die cut a backing from Dapper Denim with the same framelit.
