My sister's birthday is coming up shortly and she is a horse lover from away back. When she celebrated her 60th birthday, her kids got her a big trail riding holiday package that was a big dream for her. She's had a couple of horses over the years as well. But I haven't had much in the way of horse stamps lately to make a card for her. I just realized though, that the weather vane from the Country Road stamp set would make a great horse image if the weather vane part was masked out. It looks more like a trotter than a Western Style horse, but it's better than nothing, right? So I decided to use it to make a birthday card for her.
Here's how it turned out with the weather vane image masked and embossed in Copper Embossing Powder.
- With a copper theme, the Joyous Noel Specialty Designer Series Paper works well here, and you can see that it has a versatility to it, making it suitable for more than just holiday cards. For this card I die cut an oval window in it using the Layering Ovals Framelits and placed a stamped piece of Sahara Sand cardstock beneath it. The DSP is mounted on Dimensionals for some depth.
- On the Sahara Sand cardstock, I stamped the grass image from the Country Road stamp set in Sahara Sand ink and the wheel image in Gray Granite. After making sure the ink was really dry, using the Heat Tool, and going over it well with an Embossing Buddy, I inked up just the top of the weather vane image with Versamark ink. I used a QTip to remove ink from the vertical rod that holds the horse to the rest of the weather vane and stamped it. I sprinkled the image with Copper Stampin' Emboss Powder and used a fine paintbrush to remove any embossing powder from where I had removed the Versamark. (You'll always get a little. It's so hard to get all of it.) Then it was heat set using the Heat Tool.
- The card base is Gray Granite cardstock, dry embossed using the Pinewood Planks Dynamic Embossing Folder.
- The frame around the oval and the backing to the Sentiment (also from the Country Road set) are made from the Joyous Noel 6 x 6 Glimmer Paper. One was punched with the Classic Label Punch and one was die cut using the same oval as for the opening and the next largest one up nested together and run through the Big Shot.
- I used some Copper Trim along the bottom of the card, attaching it with a glue dot at each end underneath the layer.
