Black Ice Technique with Beautiful Moments for Monday Morning Live

black ice technique with beautiful moments 1

I have a few techniques I want to share with you over the course of the next few Monday Morning Lives on my Facebook page, Playing with Papercrafting, and the first one is the Black Ice Technique. First developed by Melissa Kerman, this technique uses foil, black ink, Versamark ink and clear embossing powder to create a unique look that always reminds me of rain.

I thought that Beautiful Moments stamp set would look great with this technique, so I chose this image and this sentiment and got started! This will be my Facebook Monday Morning Live video this morning at 11 am PDT so tune in to my Playing with Papercrafting Facebook page to watch! Or pop back here, as I will upload it to YouTube and post it back on this page after I'm done.

I'll also have all the materials and measurements listed here for you, as well.

  • I started with a Basic Black card base cut at 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" and scored at 4 1/4" along the 8 1/2" side.
  • I took a piece of Basic Gray cardstock measuring 5 1/4" x 4" and I dragged the StazOn ink pad down the cardstock on both sides with just the top edge touching the paper and keeping it straight. I used a scrap piece of copy paper to protect the cardstock from contacting the other edge of the ink pad. (You'll see this in the video)
  • The backing for the black ice panel is a piece of Basic Black cut at 3 5/8" square. I adhered it to the Basic Gray panel about 1/4" from the top and each side.
  • I added a 6" piece of 3/8" Black Glittered Organdy Ribbon across the bottom of the Basic Gray piece about 1/2" from the bottom.
  • For the technique itself, I used a 3 1/2" square piece of Sahara Sand foil from the Love You Always Foil sheets.
  • I swiped the StazOn ink pad across it both up and down, the same way I did the Basic Gray background sheet.
  • Stamped the image from Beautiful Moments on the foil in StazOn Ink. I tried another more solid image from another stamp set before this and I couldn't get it to completely fill in no matter how many times I stamped it, so went for this line image instead. Stamped the sentiment as well.
  • Dried the ink completely using the first setting on the Heat Tool.

  • Lightly dragged the Versamark Ink pad down each side, using the scrap paper to protect the middle from the other edge of the pad.
  • Covered the foil with Clear Embossing Powder and heat set it to get that beautiful ice effect.
  • Adhered it to it's background on the card front with Stampin' Seal+ to keep it flat.

A Little More Black and Blue

No, I didn't slip in the snow and bump my head, or walk into the door frame ( though I have done that many times - I'm the original klutz, remember?)  I just really, really liked the Dynamic Duo's Colour challenge this week and wanted to do more. My first post was on Monday, but it was just a little appetizer.  Now comes the main course.

The colours for the challenge again are Tempting Turquoise and Basic Black.  I used the beautiful stamp set Elements of Style for this card and a sentiment from Bring On the Cake.  This card is very simple to make because you stamp twice, adhere all the layers and you're good to go, after adding some ribbon and pearls.  I wanted a simple, but striking card for my Birthday Stampers' Dozen this week.  The background panel is from the Neutrals Designer Series Paper Stack.

And now for dessert!  The Dessert Option for the challenge this week was to add clouds, and finally, here they are in this fun little birthday card:

The clouds in the background here are made with the Cloudy Day embossing folder from the Spring Catalogue.  And my penguins are created with the help of the Owl Builder Punch (with the ears trimmed off the owl).  Some torn Whisper White card stock sponged with Tempting Turquoise forms the ice and snow of Antarctica, while the birthday cake with ALL the candles and the sentiment are from Bring On the Cake.  See that little penguin on the right is afraid that all those candles are going to melt the ice on which he is standing.  But really, he has nothing to worry about because underneath all the ice and snow, Antarctica is a continent, not an ocean like the Arctic, so there is solid ground!

Did you enjoy your meal?  If so, why not leave a comment?  I love getting to know my readers better!

Mother's Day Thoughts

Just a quick post tonight to wish all you Moms out there a Happy Mother's Day!  It was a stunning day in our neck of the woods today.  Beautiful sunny skies and very warm temperatures.  Just right for Mother's Day.  My drama group performed this skit in church and got lots of laughs.  I got three beautiful cards from my three daughters and talked to them all via phone or skype at different points in the day.  My DH took me out for a Mother's Day brunch that exceeded all expectations and I got all my bedding plants into their respective hanging baskets or planters, while Ken planted all the annual beds!  I can hardly wait to see them bloom and grow.  Last year I planted gobs of petunias and faithfully dead-headed them all until I never wanted to see a petunia again.  I went to the local nursery and looked around for alternatives, but there didn't seem to be anything as colourful and reliable as petunias.  I was almost resigned to another year of slavery to my hanging baskets, when I found it - The Supertunia.  Says right on the tag - "Deadheading not needed!"  Yay!  And the pictures of the blooms are incredible.  We shall see what happens with those.  I'll keep you posted.

Finally, I spent my evening doing what I love most - Stamping!  And can you believe that what I worked on today, Mother's Day, was a manly card for Father's Day and also for my next Technique Class, June 6, where the focus is on masculine designs and techniques.  Here's what it looks like:

This uses a technique called "Faux Mosaic", which I learned from my upline, Tamara.  The card design is very similar to one we did at one of her Technique classes.  For this technique you create your own mosaic stamp using left over rubber from Stampin' Up wood mount stamps after you have mounted your stamps on the bases.  This is what mine looks like:

I stamped the image, which comes from a great set called Countryside, which will still be available in the new catalogue, coming June 1.  I used StazOn Jet Black ink on special watercolour paper.  Then I used aqua painters to paint the image using two new In Colours for 2012 - 2014, Raspberry Ripple and Gumball Green, as well as good old Early Espresso.  I then spritzed the image using a Chocolate Chip Stampin' Write marker and the Colour Spritzer Tool.  When the image had dried, I inked up my special mosaic stamp with Versamark ink, and stamped it over the image.   I covered it with clear embossing powder and heat set it.  Then I sponged Soft Suede ink over the embossed areas and the outer edges, to bring up the mosaic design.  Great fun!   Here's a close-up of the mosaic design:

And that's all there is to it.  Hope your Mother's Day was a satisfying as mine was.  What would your ideal day look like?

I'm loving your comments, so don't hesitate to leave one!
