February Paper Pumpkin Alternatives

february paper pumpkin alternatives 1

Yes, I know I'm late for February Paper Pumpkin, but it never seemed like the right time and I also like using my Paper Pumpkin kits for thank you cards and I didn't need any when it came, but now I do so I came up with some alternate designs for last month's kit offerings! I will be showing you how I did them at my Monday Morning Live Facebook Live this morning at 11 am so tune into my Facebook Business Page: Playing with Papercrafting to see it.

Before I show you the alternatives, though, I want to show you the cards as they're designed to be assembled according to the kit directions:

They are not difficult to put together. You get enough material to make 9 sympathy or thinking about you cards with coordinating envelopes.

But, as I say, my biggest need is for more thank you cards, so I came up with some that were a little different. The first thing I like to do is to increase my yield by cutting the card bases in half, especially if the pattern extends to the back and trim them to 5 1/4" x 4", then mount them on a regular sized cardstock base in a coordinating colour. That almost doubles the number of cards you get, as long as you can figure out how to spread the extra embellishments over that many cards as well, or make your own. Here are 3 designs that are an alternative to the directions in the kit. You will need some extra equipment for these however.

  • For this I kept the Rococo Rose card base intact because it was plain on both sides.
  • I chose the silver side rather than the gold side of the vellum piece.
  • I die cut a scalloped rectangle from Mint Macaron cardstock, using the largest Stitched So Sweetly die.
  • I mounted the bouquet from the die cuts that came with the set on the scalloped rectangle using dimensionals that came with the kit.
  • The sentiment I stamped on the label came from Itty Bitty Greetings stamp set with Mossy Meadow ink. I just used adhesive to adhere it to the card front.
  • The Mossy Meadow linen thread came with the kit and I tied a wee bow with it and added it to the sentiment label with a glue dot.

  • The striped green card base covers both front and back so I cut it in half and used the 3rd largest Stitched Rectangle Dies to die cut a rectangle for the Mossy Meadow card front.
  • The Bumble Bee polka dotted strip that goes along the bottom is from the kit.
  • I stamped the image using the stamp set that comes with the kit and coloured it in with Rococo Rose, Balmy Blue, Mango Melody, Mossy Meadow and Just Jade Stampin' Blends Combo Packs. It was stamped originally with Mossy Meadow ink
  • I used the back panel of one of the Merry Merlot card bases to die cut a Scalloped Oval using the Layered Oval dies for a backing for the oval I die cut the image with (again using the Layered Oval Dies). This is popped up on dimensionals.
  • The sentiment is from Itty Bitty Greetings, stamped on the kit label in Mossy Meadow. The label is adhered using dimensionals.
  • The last thing added is the black self-adhesive sequins.

  • For this alternative design, I trimmed the front of one of the Merry Merlot designs to 5 1/4" x 4" and mounted it on a piece of Merry Merlot cardstock cut at 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" and scored on the long side at 4 1/4".
  • I took one of the gold laser cut doilies and turned it to the white side and mounted it on the card front using glue dots.
  • I added one of the little flower die cuts from the kit using glue dots as well.
  • The sentiment is from the Massive Thanks stamp set, stamped in Mossy Meadow as well. It's added to the card front with dimensionals from the kit.
  • I folded the 15" of Mossy Meadows linen thread in half and tied a bow and added it with a glue dot. The last touch was the black self-adhesive sequins.
There is a lot more you could try. The doilies would make good masks for sponging designs on the Rococo Rose card base. You could use the label sheet negative holes as frames for the smaller bouquets, or as masks for sponging a label shape onto cardstock to stamp on. You could try some water colour emboss resist with the bouquet stamp. And there must be more you could do with the word stickers! Let me know what you come up with!

Simple Stamping with the Retiring Slice of Happiness

This blogpost is Plan B. Plan A was an unboxing of my new 2020/21 Annual Catalogue Preorder, but as of the time I write this, it still hasn't been delivered. I haven't yet received a notice that the delivery date has changed, like I have for the past 3 days!!! UPS is SUCH a tease! But it's far too late in the evening to tape a video so that will have to wait for a new day. I've never received an order this late at night before, so I'm not holding out much hope that it will arrive today either, but I suppose stranger things have happened and I know UPS is busier than at Christmas right now and short of drivers!

So, back to Plan B. I decided to do some #simplestamping! Stampin' Up! has had a focus on that for the last year, at least! I'm not good at simple stamping. I don't know when to stop to make something simple, so I thought that this would be quick, easy and good practise when I'm short on time. I wanted to use a retiring set, and I focused on Slice of Happiness. This poor set really hasn't had a ton of use this year and I'm sad to see it go. It's ideal for simple stamping because it's a distINKtive stamp set, which means that the images are very realistic. And because this is one of the best working distINKtive sets I've ever used, it is perfect for a beginner's card, because it gives them a striking result just using paper, stamps and ink!

  • I've paired up this stamp set with the See a Silhouette Designer Series Paper, which is also retiring and on sale now for $11.81. The mix of Mossy Meadow, Night of Navy and Old Olive on the paper and the Granny Apple Green of the grapes work well together.
  • Isn't amazing the many shades of green you get with the distINKtive stamp using only one colour of ink - Granny Apple Green. It gives the image such depth!
  • If I was doing a beginner class with this design, I would have the panels for the grapes and the sentiment pre-cut, the former using the Stitched Shapes dies.
  • The sentiment is from the same stamp set - Slice of Happiness, a cling set. The card base is a Notecard, from a pack of 20 Notecards & Envelopes, a great suggestion for a beginner to buy to get started.
  • The background paper in this one is also from the See a Silhouette DSP. It has tones of Real Red, Mango Melody, Crushed Curry and a little Rich Razzleberry, I think.
  • The pomegranates were stamped in Cherry Cobbler ink, but look at all the tones the stamp creates! Awesome!
  • The sentiment is stamped in Granny Apple Green.
  • The image panel is die cut with the Stitched Rectangles dies. As before, I would have done that before the class, so it's not something that the beginner stamper would have to worry about.
  • The final image is of a Kiwi fruit, stamped here in Old Olive ink. The image panel is popped up on dimensionals on a panel of retiring Tropical Oasis Designer Series Paper and both are added to more See a Silhouette paper mounted on the front of a Notecard.
  • The sentiment, also from the same stamp set, is stamped in Cherry Cobbler ink and punched using the Timeless Label punch.

Ornate Garden Suite

I hope you enjoyed your Easter holiday even if you couldn't get out to a service or get together with extended family for a meal. We watched our church's wonderful Easter service online this morning and had a very noisy and interactive visit with all our kids and grandkids via Messenger today. I miss them so much! But I can't help but think about all the people who are stuck quarantining alone! How the hours must stretch out endlessly for them. I wonder how we could make life more happy for those people?

I finally caved and purchased some of the Ornate Garden Suite last week and it arrived just before the weekend. I decided to get it out and play with it yesterday. Here's what I managed to create:

  • I struggled a bit getting the elegant bits and pieces of this suite to play nicely together. Each die and stamp is beautiful but they don't necessarily fit well together, at least with my taste in stamping. I figure that they will make great accessories for other stamp and die sets.
  • I used one of the beautiful edge dies to make an ornate edge that allows the card insert to show through. This particular edge die can also create a kind of die cut ribbon as it has an extra edge die that allows you to cut through the cardstock on both sides, to make a narrow strip with the rose design, which you could add to the top of a contrasting piece of cardstock or go for texture in tone on tone.
  • The ornate rectangle dies do not make frames so you need to add layers. I struggled to find some shape to add to the middle that I could do some stamping on. I used one of the Stitched Rectangle dies, but had to lengthen it by not cutting the bottom edge and extending the die and recutting to make it longer.
  • The images are from the Ornate Style stamp set. The single daisy was stamped, then masked and stamped over a couple of times. When the mask was removed, it looked as though the other two were behind it. I coloured them in with Petal Pink Stampin' Blends Combo and Soft Sea Foam Stampin' Blends Combo. The center was Mango Melody Combo.
  • The sentiments are from the Ornate thanks stamp set and are stamped in Soft Suede.

If you registered for my April Online Technique Class, you should have your materials by the end of the day and just a reminder to watch my Facebook Live Class tomorrow night at 7 pm on my Playing with Papercrafting Facebook page. After that it will be available on a limited access YouTube video with the link emailed out to everyone who registered. That way, you can complete the projects when you choose. Make sure you contact me if there turn out to be any supplies you need to complete your projects.
