Well, there is a lot of exciting news happening today, especially if you go on over to our challenge blog: As You See It Challenges! Not only is there a new challenge up this morning, but we have also gained a couple of new, but well-known faces on our design team. Pop over to check them out!!
Our new challenge is based on circles and there were several routes I could have taken with this sketch. Here it is:
Because I love anything beachy (my house is decorated coastal style) and two-step stamping, I was dying to ink up my new stamp set, So Many Shells! And, I ended up sponging the circle instead of layering it with reverse masking. (Although I did layer the shells.) Here's a closer look:
- Using a piece of cardstock cut to the same dimensions as the the Whisper White front panel, I die cut a hole in it, in the location I wanted the focal point to be, using the Layering Circles Framelits. I placed it over the Whisper White panel and used a strip of washi tape to create a line for the break between the sand and the water. I sponged the sand with Sahara Sand in the middle and Crumb Cake around the outside edges. I used one of the sand texture stamps from High Tide to create a little more texture on the sand, but the shells mostly cover that up.
- I moved the washi tape a bit higher to create a straight line for the horizon between the water and the sky. I sponged in the water - Pool Party in the middle with Bermuda Bay at the edges. I added some wave texture from another High Tide stamp.
- I removed the washi tape completely and just sponged in the sky with Pool Party at the horizon and Bermuda Bay around the edges.
- I love the shells from So Many Shells and the two step stamping process that makes them so realistic. The trick to stamping them successfully is to stamp the more detailed stamp with the darker colour ink first.
- I wanted the clam shell to have a mostly white look to it, but I also wanted the lines and the textures stamped. I first stamped the less detailed background in Peekaboo Peach and then dried it completely and stamped the details in Versamark and added White Stampin Emboss Powder and heat set it. You can see the result above.
- The Miracles Happen sentiment doesn't normally curve like that but that's the beauty of photopolymer stamps. The top curved sentiment was replaced by the flying gulls from High Tide. Don't you love the Seas the Day sentiment, also from So Many Shells?
