Whale of a Time Shaker for As You See It Challenges

Okay, what is is with the Whale of a Time Suite that has me hooked? I just can't get enough! Every time I go to make a card, I have to make a conscious effort to look at other suites and papers, because I am always drawn to all the elements of this suite. I think one of the factors is the beautiful richness of the colour and design in the Whale of a Time Designer Series Paper! And then there is that absolutely gorgeous Seabed 3D Embossing Folder. I've never seen one quite so delicate and detailed before. The sheer Pool Party ribbon, the sequins, especially the little seashell ones and the cute sentiments from the stamp set....Sigh! I'm in love! 

So, this week for As You See It Challenges, we had a sketch challenge, that was a bit, er, challenging! As I looked at the sketch, I had an epiphany: shaker card!

Shaker card made me think of those Whale of a Time Sequins and then I had the whole card figured out in my head! The stars of the show were sea turtles fussy cut from one of the Whale of a Time DSP designs. I love how it looks like they are swimming right out of the card!  Let's take a closer look at how the shaker card works:

• I chose Pool Party for both the card base and the shaker card front. I mounted one of my favourite designs from the Whale of a Time Designer Series Paper (DSP) in the background. To me, it looks like seaweed waving in the ocean currents. 
• I die cut two small rectangles using the Stitched Rectangles Dies, although, in retrospect, I could have just cut one stitched square.
• Then I embossed the whole Pool Party panel with the Seabed 3D Embossing Folder. Isn't it exquisite?
• Turning it over, I added a piece of Window Sheet that I cut just smaller than the Pool Party panel and glued it on making sure it was tight around the edge of the opening. 
• I added Foam Adhesive Strips around the opening on the backside, making sure there were no gaps for sequins to escape, then added enough foam strips to the rest of the panel for mounting on the card front without leaving any areas where the panel could sag without support.
• I added enough sequins for a good show, then another piece of the background DSP to the top of the foam adhesive strips, once the film backing the adhesive strips was removed. With a little extra adhesive on the top of the new DSP over the sequins, the whole panel is adhered to the card front.
• The sea turtles were fussy cut from the DSP and the sea weed was die cut from vellum and Coastal Cabana cardstock using the Smooth Sailing Dies. These were stamped with some Just Jade ink and the sprinkle image from the Whale Done stamp set and added to the card front using Glue Dots. The sentiment is from the Whale Done stamp set and is stamped in Pretty Peacock ink.

Painted with Love Shaker Card for Freshly Made Sketches

Don't you love killing two birds with one stone? Well, not literally! I mean being able to complete two tasks by doing one! Today was a good example. I have a Catalogue Launch coming up on Saturday, so I've been working on samples from the Occasions Catalogue and Sale-A-Bration Brochure for that. I was planning on creating a shaker Valentine card using the Painted with Love Specialty Designer Series Paper and the new Gold Glitter Flakes. I've also been dying to enter a card challenge and the Freshly Made Sketches challenge this week seemed like a good fit. I took a quick look at the sketch:

and designed my card.

The location of the shaker cut out was, in large part, determined by the locations of the gold foil on the paper, trying to keep as much of it as possible. But my memory of the sketch was also skewed by my annoying Left/Right disability. If you tell me to turn left, I really have to concentrate to remember which way that is. Luckily, I grew up playing the piano, because that's how I remember which is which, imagining my hands on the keyboard. Anyone else have this problem besides me?

I didn't stop to think about it this time, and once I'd already cut my shaker opening, I realized that it was on the wrong side for the sketch, but decided to go ahead and enter it any way!

• Location aside, I really like this design and you can't go wrong with this Painted with Love Specialty Designer Series Paper! It's so rich and luscious with all those broad brush strokes and gold foil that anything you make with it is going to look good!
• I used the Sweet & Sassy Framelit dies to die cut all the heart shapes in this card, including the shaker card opening, the frame for the shaker opening and the other hearts on the card front.
• I love the combination of the Calypso Coral, the Blushing Bride and the Gold. So pretty.

• I took the heart shape that I had die cut from the shaker opening and reversed it to show through the Window Sheet window. I used the Amazing You stamp set from the Sale-A-Bration Brochure to stamp the words You are simply.. on it.
• Foam Adhesive Strips are perfect for forming a barrier around the area where the gold glitter needs to go and are double adhesive sided so that you can stick it to the window sheet and another piece of cardstock behind to lock in the Gold Glitter Flakes.
• The die cut sentiment is from the Celebrate You Thinlit set from the SAB Brochure as well. It is one of the two Level 2 rewards for spending $120 in one order.

Learn to Make an Illuminated Easel Shaker Card!

Can you believe that this is the last weekend in October? And Halloween is on Monday? Where does the time go? I'm feeling anxious about starting my Christmas shopping! The big thing on my mind right now, though, is finishing my November newsletter and getting it out there this weekend. Especially because I have a really busy weekend coming up. Last Saturday, our Refugee Care Collective got together to make apple pies as a fundraiser. We made 105 pies before noon, but still had a lot of apples left, so we're doing the same thing this Saturday! They're $10 each and really yummy for those of you who live nearby and want in on it.

On Sunday, I'm rehearsing a Christmas play with the Sunday School kids that we will be presenting on December 11th. There isn't much time to get it together when we can only rehearse on Sundays, so that's a bit scary! And I'm helping with an Alpha course Sunday night!

So with all that going on, it's not leaving a lot of time left over for the newsletter! I do have the Free Photo Tutorial planned however. As you know, if you subscribe to my newsletter, each month I offer a free photo tutorial with step-by-step instructions for making a papercrafting project, and this month, I will be showing you how to create this beautiful Illuminated Easel card that is also a shaker card.

Although the card folds flat for mailing, you can prop it up as shown and put a little battery powered votive candle in behind the front and it will shine through the window with the wreath on it. You can just see some trees in the distance behind the sequin snow that "falls" when you tip the card. The window makes use of the antique-looking Fabulous Foil Designer Acetate which is sturdier and easier to use than Window sheets. The walls and carpet are from the Presents & Pinecones Designer Series Paper, while the window is created with the Hearth and Home Framelits.
