Walk in the Wild Adventure Bound

Well, the workshop for which I am prepping is going to be pretty large, so all my designs have to be based on whether or not I have enough materials to make them. My hostess loves the Adventure Bound Designer Series Paper Stack and wanted a card made using that series, but it takes quite a few of the stacks to have enough paper for a large workshop. By using smaller pieces I was able to make this design work and I paired it with the Walk in the Wild Stamp Set and some embossing with Early Espresso Stampin' Emboss Powder!

  • I just love the Birch Bark design. It looks so three dimensional, it almost feels like I could grab an edge and peel some off! Mounted just over the woodpile design, gives it a nice, rugged look perfect for a masculine card.
  • I looked through the Guy Greetings stamp set for a masculine image that would work with the paper, but nothing looked right, so I got out my favourite moose stamp from Walk in the Wild and stamped him in Early Espresso Ink. He is die cut using the Labels Collection Framelit Dies and I die cut another the same size from Early Espresso cardstock, cut it in half horizontally and mounted them a little offset, behind the moose. When you do that, you might have to trim the sides close to the Whisper White so you can't see the gap. The edges of the moose label are also sponged with Early Espresso ink and the word Husband from Guy Greetings is embossed with Early Espresso Stampin' Emboss Powder.
  • The background panel is dry embossed with the Woodgrain Embossing Folder and the two brads at the top are the Candy Dot Bases. I used the Stampin' Pierce Mat and Paper Piercing Tool to pierce the paper for the brads.
I love making masculine cards, and I hope you'll try this design for the guys in your life. Guy Greetings has words you can use instead of Husband, such as Uncle, Grandpa, Dad, Father and Brother, so you have a whole range of family for whom you could make this card.

There is one more piece of news from Stampin' Up! that I need to share with you and it is particularly for those of you who use our digital design program, My Digital Studio. This program has not developed as Stampin' Up! had hoped and will be discontinued as of May 31, 2015. There will no longer be support for this platform after that date and you will no longer be able to purchase any digital content. There will not be any print services available as well. You may continue to use the program as before, and have it printed elsewhere, but if there are any digital images you wish to download, you need to purchase and download them before May 31 of this year. This is sad news for many, but I wanted you to know so that you could get anything you needed before it was too late.

A Walk in the Wild for The Paper Players

Where I am staying right now, with my daughter up in central BC, which we consider to be north, due to cold, cold winters, it is a haven for wildlife.  Right now, bears abound in and around the town. The salmon run has not been very large this year because water levels in the rivers are low.  The summer was so dry that the berry crop was poor as well.  So, in order to survive this winter, the bears need to build up their fat stores and they are coming into the town to raid the fruit trees and garbage cans.  My daughter saw one on their street as she was walking home one day.

Another species that is abundant in the area is moose.  They pose a hazard on the highway, given their penchant for charging cars from out of nowhere.  At an average of 1000 pounds each, they can do major damage to both you and your car. What is interesting is that they are being endangered in this area by a very small species known as the winter tick. The winter tick infests the moose by the thousands and can actually drain the blood supply of a single moose.

When The Paper Players came out with their challenge this week, I knew the the moose from  Walk in the Wild would be the star of the show, on a masculine birthday card.  As I was also designing some cards using burlap for my next Technique Nights, I planned for a burlap background to add to the masculine appeal.

  • It seems like I often go to monochromatic palettes in shades of browns when I do masculine cards.  I know it doesn't need to be that way, but I really like the somewhat vintage look myself, so it is the first thing I think of.  In this case I used Soft Suede.
  • The burlap ribbon we have is only 1 1/4" wide, and I needed more of that to produce a backdrop for the main image.  I used three pieces of the ribbon 4 inches long and then I frayed the outside edges.  For the left ribbon, that meant fraying the left side of the ribbon as well as the bottom and top. For the right ribbon that meant fraying the right side of the ribbon as well as the bottom and the top.  For the middle ribbon, I only frayed the top and bottom.  Then they were adhered to the card side by side and it creates a pretty good facsimile of a frayed piece of burlap.
  • The birthday sentiment is from Four You and I added an Antique Brad for balance.  I've been dying to use one of the sentiments from @SoSocial, so I chose @oneraddad and stamped it in Early Espresso ink on one of the Essentials Wooden Elements.
Thanks for popping by today, and join me tomorrow for a new As You See It Challenge card.

More Hybrid Valentines

Well, as you know, I have three little grandsons and I can't send one a Valentine without sending the other two one as well! So I made two more "hybrid" Valentines, hybrid meaning __________??  (Pop quiz from yesterday.)

Here are my three adorable little guys:

Parker, aged 2,

Kesten, aged 19 months,

and Wyatt, aged 7 months

(Sigh!)  As a Grandma, I'm so blessed!  I've seen Parker and Wyatt fairly recently, but Kesten lives quite a bit further north and we're planning on visiting near the end of March when the weather will have warmed a bit and the roads will be better (hopefully).

Here are the other two hybrid Valentines.

The moose is for Kesten, up north.  My daughter, Kris, is creating a book of original paintings of Northern Animals for Kesten, and there is a moose in it, so I thought this realistic image of a bull moose would be recognized.

The whale is for Wyatt because he and his family live on the coast of BC and he has a lot of whale toys.  As well his house is full of nautical paraphernalia, so this is appropriate for him!

Both valentines are hybrids because I created the sentiments using My Digital Studio.  I wanted something more personal than the stamps I have and something that would tie the images to Valentine's Day.

  •  I used the Hardwood background stamp for the first time and I am really pleased with the clear, crisp woodgrain.  I have it mounted on some Crushed Curry cardstock and placed on a base of Soft Suede cardstock.
  • The 1 1/4" Burlap Ribbon is the perfect choice for this texture-rich card.  I love the masculine feel it gives to the Valentine.
  • The moose is such a great image from the set Walk in the Wild, which, if I remember correctly was one of the first sets I bought from the Annual Catalogue.  I used one of the Window Frames Collection Framelits to die cut the panel and the same sized framelit to cut another from Early Espresso.  I cut that in half from side to side and mounted it a little offset from the panel to make a very narrow matte.
  • The hybrid sentiment was printed on Whisper White card stock and matted with Early Espresso cardstock as well.
  • I used a sea-going colour palette of Night of Navy, Real Red and Crushed Curry for this card for Wyatt.  The Crushed Curry Polka Dot paper is from the Regals Designer Series Paper Stacks.
  • The images are from the Hello, Sailor stamp set from the Occasions Mini Catalogue.  The whale panel is die cut using one of the Circles Collection Framelits and the Night of Navy backing it was punched with the 2 1/2" Circle Punch.  This makes a narrower matte than you would get with the next largest Circle framelit.
  • I created a matte for the sentiment panel right on My Digital Studio so I didn't have to make one from cardstock.  The sentiment panel was printed on Whisper White cardstock. and trimmed.
  • The Ahoy stamp is also from Hello, Sailor, and was die cut with one of the new Word Bubbles Framelits.
One more thing I did was send each family some chocolate - Ghirardelli Chocolate, Dark and Mint Squares and I created some cute holders for them that I CASED from Mary Fish.  They are totally cute and really easy to do with the new punches.  The two inch width that we are restricted to with these punches turns out to be perfect for the Ghirardelli squares.

So that's a wrap on Valentine's Day.  I hope you found something over the last few weeks that you could do for your loved ones!

See you again tomorrow with a new As You See It Challenge.
