Leaves of Holly Bundle for As You See It Challenge #278

leaves of holly bundle for aysi challenge #278 1

It's Sketch Challenge time again over at As You See It Challenges and it's a pretty open kind of sketch to work with. The challenge is called Three to Get Ready because it's based on a trio of images on the card front, plus the sentiment. Here's the challenge banner to have a look at:

challenge #278

Because the circles can be any shape, and because I haven't even started using my July/Dec Mini Catalogue preorder materials, I thought I would use a bundle called Leaves of Holly to make this project. There are some layered die cut holly leaves and berries that work, even though they are on the verge of being too big. Also for the bottom circle and sentiment, I used a label that has attached holly leaves and added an embellishment that mimics holly leaves. Here's a closer look:

  • On an Evening Evergreen card base, I added a layer of Distressed Gold Specialty Paper, which really adds to the richness of this card. I also used this paper to die cut the detailed layer of the holly berries.
  • Then I added a smaller layer of Boughs of Holly Designer Series Paper and mounted at a bit of a jaunty angle, as per the sketch.
  • I used two base colours for the die cut holly leaves: Soft Succulent and Old Olive. I was torn about whether to use just one of them or mix them up and decided to go with the latter idea especially as I mixed the colours in the die cut fir sprigs I embellished with.
  • The die cut out lines for the holly leaves were all in Evening Evergreen. They are so easy to match with the base layer. I used a tiny amount of Multipurpose Liquid Glue to adhere them.
  • For the sentiment, I die cut the large label once in Evening Evergreen.  I also die cut the leaf backgrounds in Soft Succulent and mounted them behind the outlines in the label with Liquid Glue.
  • I stamped the sentiment from the Leaves of Holly stamp set on Basic White cardstock in Soft Succulent ink and die cut it with the small label die, then used Seal to adhere it to the large label field.
  • I coloured the berries on one of the Textural Elements embellishments with the light Cherry Cobbler Stampin' Blends marker. Then I used a Blender Pen to add Versamark ink to the stems and the outside edges of the berries. I added Gold embossing powder and heat set it. I added this to the card front along with a couple of fir sprigs using Glue Dots.
  • Using Simply Elegant Gold Trim, I added a little gold bow using a Glue dot.

  1. So much to love about this card Heather, even though I'm not feeling remotely festive! I love the rich red and greens and the addition of the distressed gold adds a wonderful touch of luxury and elegance. Gorgeous!

  3. What a gorgeous Christmas card, Heather! It seems too early to be thinking Christmas but based on the speed with which the first six months have gone, maybe not! The distressed gold makes a festive, yet subtle, background layer.

  5. Thanks, guys! I wasn't sure I liked it when all was said and done. It was like fruit cake, way too rich for my liking, but it was what it was and no time was had to change it! Besides, I'd spent way to long on it already! Next time I'll try some non-traditional colours.
