A Tribute to Mr. O for Mojo Monday

A good friend of ours just celebrated his birthday, and of course, I made a card for him. We like to call him Mr. O! He and his wife have been our friends for a long time, and they are kind of friends that you can just pick up with where you left off, when you get together after a long time apart.

Mr. O was a big part of my Drama Ministry at church and one of the things he is known for is his cover of Mr. Bean skits. In fact, my hubby, Ken, usually plays the straight man to Mr. O's Mr. Bean. You should just see them do Mr. Bean changes into his swimsuit on the beach beside the blind man! You'd die laughing.

I bet you're wondering what kind of card I would make for someone like that! He is just a classy person with a great sense of humour, but who never forgets his roots from back on the farm. So Mr. O, this is for you!

I am really enjoying the Black, White and Gold palette from the Winter Wonderland Designer Series Paper, so I used some of the other designs from it on this card and paired it with the Winter Wonderland Designer Vellum Stack. I used the Mojo Monday challenge sketch for this week as the layout.

What a unique sketch! Thanks for your inspiration, Julee Tilman! Here's a closer look at the card:

  • I just love the mix of classy and rustic that makes up the designs in this set. That's why I thought it would be perfect for Mr. O! The woodsy branches with the pinecones, the black crackle design are all so unique! If you don't have the Winter Wonderland specialty Designer Series Paper yet, you should get it. I like every design in the series!
  • The Burlap Ribbon adds to the rustic side of the card while adding the Winter Wonderland Designer Vellum with the gold foil stripes plays to the classy angle.
  • The greeting is simple and contrasts with the different designs in the background. The sentiment is from the Tin of Cards Stamp Set and the little flourish at the bottom, embossed with Gold Stampin' Emboss Powder, is from Friendly Wishes, a new set in the Annual Catalogue.
  • Don't you love how you can take a primarily Christmas DSP and use it quite easily for a birthday card? It makes buying these products so much more worth while when they are versatile like that.
The Clearance Rack has been stocked with new products - well, actually, new OLD products! They go fast, so let me know if you want anything. I'll put and order in this week if you do.

Definitely Dahlia for the Pals

This week's Pals Paper Arts Challenge is a colour challenge that calls for Early Espresso, Sahara Sand and Marina Mist. It's not one that I would normally choose, in fact, I can't remember the last time I used Marina Mist. But these three colours are quite striking together and I tried them out using a new background stamp called Definitely Dahlia. I think I will 'definitely' use this combination again!

Since Sahara Sand is one of the three colours in the Timeless Elegance Designer Series Paper, I picked out one Art Deco design from the pack to use as a background.

  • I stamped the dahlia image from Definitely Dahlia 3 times. The first time I stamped the full image in Marina Mist ink after stamping off once and stamped the sentiment on it using a Friendly Wishes greeting in Early Espresso. I die cut a square as you can see above, using the Squares Collection framelits. I then hand snipped the few petals above the sentiment and mounted it on the next largest square of Early Espresso. I stamped the dahlia twice more, full strength on Very Vanilla cardstock, and snipped out ever-smaller layers. What was a little tricky was cutting the top and left edges to match the square correctly while lining up the images. If I had known that I was about to do the layering I would have die cut all three layers at once, but I didn't think of it until the bottom layer was already mounted on the matte.

  • Notice the ribbon. The cotton ribbon collection is the only one with both Early Espresso and Marina Mist ribbons. The Marina Mist ribbon just happens to be one of the Weekly Deals this week!
  • I added a few medium Pearls to the flower center.

Today is Weekly Deals day, so here's another set of weekly deals, good for a week!
