Layers of Beauty for As You See It Challenge #352

It's an interesting challenge thought up by my team mate, Joanne, over at As You See It Challenges, this week! It's a Fill in the Blank Challenge which asks what your favourite shape is to use on a card. For a multitude of reasons, which I won't go into here, I got a late start, and when I checked out what my teammates had chosen, circles was pretty much done to death, albeit beautifully. Someone had chosen squares, and that left triangles, rectangles and ovals. But when I really thought about it, the shape that I really use the most often, even though some might consider it boring, is the rectangle. I wouldn't know what to do without it!! But how to make an interesting card using the same old, same old?

Then I remembered an old technique called triple time stamping, which involves matting the layers of white panels with coloured cardstock. Before adding the mattes, however, you stack the white layers, centering each one on the larger one previous, anchoring them lightly with a little semi-permanent tape. Then you stamp a large image that covers all the layers and colour it in. After, you separate the white layers and insert the mattes between them. Anyway, here's the Challenge Banner:

And here's the card I came up with using this technique again:

• I started with a base of Azure Afternoon, and using the Deckled Rectangle dies I created a series of panels of Basic White cardstock and Balmy Blue mattes, each smaller than the next until I had 3 white panels and 2 mattes.
• I separated all the white panels and centered them on each other, smallest first, securing them with temporary hold tape.
• Then I used the large image from the photopolymer stamp set, Layers of Beauty, inked up in Memento Tuxedo Black ink, to stamp the image across all three panels.
• Keeping all the layers secured together, I used Stampin' Blends markers to colour in the image with combos in Balmy Blue, Old Olive, Berry Blush, Lemon Lime Twist and Pool Party Light for shadowing.
• I separated the white layers and adhered them to their mattes, then glued them all on the card front in order.
• The sentiment, from the Layers of Beauty stamp set, was stamped on the smallest deckled rectangle, in Old Olive, and added to the card front with Stampin' Dimensionals.
• Clear embellishments were added.

The Open Sea Double Time Stamping

I needed a masculine design for my Birthday Stamper's Dozen tonight, so I went to Google to search for one. I saw several different designs for The Open Sea stamp set that were done with Triple Time stamping and, as it has been awhile since I've used that technique, I thought I'd try it again. But I wanted a more prominent focal point than that technique allows, so I decided to go with just Double Time stamping and save the last panel for the sentiment and the ship image.

Take a closer look and I'll tell you how to do Double or Triple Time stamping. It's so easy, but very striking!

• Start with your card base at 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", scored so that the front is 5 1/2" x 4 1/4"( Night of Navy used here). Cut a piece of Whisper White cardstock 5 1/4" x 4".  Cut another piece of coloured cardstock (here I used Sahara Sand) at 4 1/4" x 3 1/4", and another Whisper White at 4 1/4" x 3". The center background (Night of Navy) measures 3 1/2" x 2 1/4" and the sentiment panel of Whisper White is 3 1/4" x 2".
• To stamp Triple Time, you would take all three Whisper White pieces and center them on each other, securing with just a tiny bit of adhesive. Then stamp images over all three panels at once, overlapping the images on more than one panel as you stamp. For Double Time, do the same only with just the largest two layers.
• Here I used the Ship's Ledger, the anchor and the compass from The Open Sea to stamp images on the larger two white panels using Sahara Sand Ink and Night of Navy Ink.
• Then center the largest white panel on the card base and adhere. Remove the medium white panel and mount on the slightly larger Sahara Sand backing, then center both on the larger panel and adhere. The backing covers up the "shadow" of the piece of paper on top, where the difference in height caused an area where no ink could touch the paper.
• Stamp the sentiment (from Guy Greetings) in Night of Navy and a stamped-off image of the ship from the Open Sea in Sahara Sand. Mount this paper on it's Night of Navy backing and add some 1/2" Seam Binding Ribbon in Night of Navy. Use Stampin' Dimensionals to add to the card front, centered.

A Quick Post

One of my favourite crafting blogs is written by Dawn Olchefske.  I love her creativity, but most of all, her tutorials, which are clear and easy to follow....and she has such a nice-sounding voice!  Her latest post introduced a technique she calls "Triple Time Stamping"  and she created a beautiful card that I decided to CASE.

One of my daughters is going through a particularly difficult time right now and I wanted to let her know how much she is loved and thought about.  This elegant card seemed to be the right touch for this instance.

I used Raspberry Ripple, a rich and beautiful new In Colour, both in the card base and mattes and as the ink for the images.  Two of the stamps sets, Papaya Collage and One in a Million are new to the 2012-2013 Idea Book and Catalogue.  The background stamp is from an old favourite, Creative Elements.   The card is created by cutting the three panels of Whisper White cardstock and temporarily adhering them with a small spot of Snail adhesive, then stamping on them like they were a single sheet.  You then take them apart and adhere them permanently on their mattes except for the largest one.  Before adhering that one, you add the Cherry Cobbler seam binding ribbon and cut out the sentiment and it's matte using the smallest and next to smallest Labels Framelits.  I popped these up by mounting them with Stampin' Dimensionals, and added some Basic Rhinestones on the flourishes.  By the way, I got the flourishes on the sentiment panel by using a Crumb Cake Stampin' Write marker on the tips of the Creative Elements sentiment frame. (See below).

I used a single piece of Whisper White, stamped again with the flourish from Creative Elements and the rose from Papaya Collage, along with the sentiment from Word Play, for the inside of the card.

I'm hoping that it lifts her spirits, as she has lifted the spirits of so many others in the past.
