Butterfly Flight for As You See It Challenge #380 - Quadrants

butterfly flight for aysi #380 1

With our latest As You See It Challenge being a sketch challenge, it gives me a chance to experiment with some of Stampin' Up's newest technology: the Stampin' Hot Foil System©! I'm not kidding when I say that this was the first time I've ever used it, so the learning curve is not too steep, but the results were very satisfying! Let me show you the lovely sketch I was working off of designed by the other Heather, Heather H.:

as you see it challenge #380
I kept the sketch pretty much as the challenge indicates although you're allowed to change shapes a bit and turn or flip the sketch. I was more focussed on using the new technology than changing up the sketch. Here's how it turned out again:

  • I started with a normal card base of Crumb Cake cardstock, measuring 5 1/2" x 8 1/2", scored on the long side at 4 1/4". I chose Crumb Cake because it tends to look really great with a pale pink, but I wasn't happy with how raw and unfinished it ended up looking. I think I would have added more layers under each quadrant if I had  had the time.
  • Then I cut a small piece of Crumb Cake, 1 1/4" x 4 1/4", which is big enough to hold the sentiment from the Classic Greetings Hot Foil Dies set. It will form the horizontal center piece of the sketch.
  • Then I used some of the Heirloom Boutique 12" x 12" Two Tone Cardstock in Barely Blush. I used a 6" x  5" piece to create a background quadrant using the Swiss Dots Hot Foil Dies. The Two Tone Cardstock is recommended for the Hot Foil technique because it is smoother than our regular cardstock, and takes up the foil more smoothly and completely.
  • To use the Stampin' Hot Foil System, you first heat up the Stampin' Hot Foil Platform, using the electrical cord specialized for the country you live in. When it beeps and the light is steady, place the die you will be using face up (flat side down) on the platform surface. (Make sure the platform is sitting in the silicone platform station so it doesn't injure your furniture.)
  • On top of the die, add a good sized piece of the foil of your choice with the shiny side down, away from you. On top of that, add a piece of smooth cardstock, with the side you want to have the hot foil added to, facing down.
  • Add the green shift plate, and the clear plate over that, then press the power button, and wait for a short time until it beeps again.
  • Then unplug the cord from the side of the platform and transfer the whole thing to your Cut N' Emboss Machine.
  • Run it through you machine, very slowly, giving the foil time to transfer to the cardstock. When the platform is well-through, remove the silicone platform station and carefully remove the plates.
  • Slowly separate the foil from the paper and you should now have the polka dots in gold on the Barely Blush Two Tone cardstock.
  • Take that 6" x 5" piece and cut into two 1 5/8" x 5" pieces and glue them at two even centering on your card front.
  • Place the horizontal crosspiece across the center, and use the above technique to add gold foil to the sentiment of your choice from the Classic Greetings Hot Foil Dies. Make sure the sentiment fits the cardstock piece.
  • To make the butterflies use the Butterfly Flight Hot Foil Die on the Barely Blush Two Tone Cardstock, but instead of gold foil, use the pink foil. Before die cutting all the butterflies, with the coordinating die, use the Butterfly Flight Decorative Masks to colour them in with ink and blending brushes. I used Bubble Bath, Lemon Lolly and Pool Party inks.
  • After die cutting them, I added them to the front and the inside, using mini Stampin' Dimensionals and Tombo glue.
  • I finished off with some Array of Dots. It was a lot of fun and not too difficult at all.
