Happy Thanksgiving, Canada!

Today is officially Thanksgiving Day in Canada, although most of us celebrate it with a big turkey dinner on Saturday or Sunday, because Monday is a travel day for out-of-town family and friends!  I love Thanksgiving because, here in Canada, it is one of the least commercialized holidays we have and we just concentrate on spending time together, getting out in the brisk October air and focusing on thankfulness!  I'm excited because my youngest daughter and her family will be coming for the weekend!

So, in honour of the occasion, I got out my Curvy Keepsakes Box die again and made one of these:

Gobble, gobble!  The guest of honour at Sunday night dinner.  This was so easy and fun to create!

  • First I die cut and assembled the Curvy Keepsake Box from Crumb Cake cardstock.
  • I got out the Owl Builder punch and punched out the owl, also in Crumb Cake, turned him upside down and trimmed off the feet.  This made the turkey's head.
  • The vest is punched out and glued under the head to become the neck.
  • The eyes are created with the Owl Builder Punch as well using Crumb Cake, Whisper White and Basic Black cardstock scraps.  The beak is the tip of the Triangle Punch,  Just don't insert the Crushed Curry cardstock all the way in.  And the red wattle is made by punching out the small heart shape from the Itty Bitty Accents punch pack and cutting it in two, overlapping the two halves when you glue it on.
  • The tail feathers are die cut from different coloured cardstock using the Feathers Framelits. The colours I used were Early Espresso, Crushed Curry, Pumpkin Pie, Cajun Craze, and Crumb Cake.  Using Fast Fuse adhesive I adhered them on a circle of Crumb Cake punched with the   1 3/4" Circle Punch, then added another circle on top before adding it to the other end of the Curvy Keepsake Box.
  • The wings are made from the bird's body punched using the Bird Builder Punch!
  • The sentiment is from the Truly Grateful stamp set and is stamped in Early Espresso ink on Whisper White and punched with the Modern Label Punch.  I punched the label twice more, once from Crushed Curry and once from Cajun Craze.  I cut those two in half and added them to each end of the label.
That's it!  Punch art at its most fun!  Have a great Thanksgiving!

Truly Grateful for Pals Paper Arts

I AM truly grateful for Pals Paper Arts!  I love their challenges and I love their design team. They have such a variety of great ideas from so many awesome designers.  Sometimes it's hard to find an idea someone else hasn't already come up with.  I remember the card I made for The Paper Players Challenge theme of Wild Life and I chose to create a card based on the viral video, "What Does the Fox Say" by Ylvis.  I was so excited to post it on the Challenge page, but then I realized that someone else had had the same idea.  I was so deflated!  I do make a point of not looking at a lot of the entries before designing my card so I won't unconsciously copy someone else's design elements, but it doesn't always prevent similar looking cards.

This week Pals Paper Arts has a colour challenge:
.

Delicious looking colours together.  Here's how I worked with it:

  • My mattes, the card base and the ink were all in Early Espresso.  It does a great job of showcasing the lovely and soft Subtles, Calypso Coral and So Saffron.  I usually cut the mattes 1/8" larger than the image panel on all sides.  I used Crumb Cake as my neutral colour.
  • I love all the texture in this Truly Grateful stamp set.  The wood panelling, the tree slice and the wheat sheaf are full of great texture.  I hand cut the wheat and the tree slice using my paper snips.
  • Want to know a great trick for making the little linen thread "bow" that is really simple? Just wrap the linen thread around 3 fingers about three times.  Remove it from your fingers and twist once to make a figure eight.  Add a glue dot to the middle where the threads cross each other and it will not only hold your bow together, it will also adhere it to the appropriate panel. Then you can top it with a button or some other embellishment.
And it's time for this week's:

An Autumn Card for The Paper Players

I was excited to see that The Paper Players had a Fall Theme this week.  I love the warm and vibrant colours of autumn and the textures.  My youngest daughter, Jaimie, loves the fall months as well, especially October, her birthday month.  I wanted to share with you a little about her talents with watercolour and script that she is displaying and selling on Etsy.

Here is her latest print:

Fall Art Printable/ Autumn Printable/ Autumn Decor/ Instant Download

If you are interested in her work, here is her Etsy store, HoneyBee Paperie.

Here is The Paper Players' Challenge #212:

I used a fall palette from the Designer Series Paper I used on this card, Colour Me Autumn.  The layout I chose was from a Mojo Monday sketch from away back:

And here is another look at my design:

  • This is such an interesting layout to work with.  I had a lot of fun with all the different layers.  I used this layout way back in September 2012 and I updated it with fresh colours and images. It is one of my all-time favourites.
  • I used lots of different stamp sets for this card:  Truly Grateful, Trust God, Kinda Eclectic and Apothecary Art.  See if you can tell me which image belongs to which set in the comments below.  No fair looking in the catalogue!
  • I really like the look of excess embossing powder on the edges of an embossed panel.  After stamping the leaf image in VersaMark, I also added a little VersaMark around the edges of the 2 1/2" circle.  I added Gold Stampin' Emboss powder and heat set the whole thing with my Heat Tool.
  • The Burlap Ribbon is a great accent for a fall card.  It reminds me of Potato Sacks that we used to use for Sack Races!  Super texture!
Thanks for stopping by today.  Stay tuned tomorrow for another As You See It Challenge!
