Inside the Lines for Freshly Made Sketches

I hope you had a fine weekend! The cold weather finally warmed up here and the snow stopped so it had to be better than last week! I went out for some retail therapy with some gift cards I got for Christmas and my birthday and we also went with some friends to see a movie. All very nice! And yesterday, I sat down to work on a new card design. I wanted to showcase the Sale-A-Bration reward that I haven't spent much time on and that's the Inside the Lines Designer Series Paper. I decided to use it with the Freshly Made Sketches Challenge for this past week:

I needed to go with a landscape orientation rather than a portrait one in order to get a piece of the DSP that was large enough to have a full flower on it to colour so I changed the sketch around a bit. Of course, it was a perfect opportunity to use the Watercolour Pencils along with my Blender Pens and I am so pleased with the way the colouring turned out. This paper would be a great gift for someone who loves adult colouring books. Pair it up with the Watercolour pencils and a Blender Pen and you would be their favourite person!

I hope you can see the sketch in this design:

• When colouring, I used more colour on the areas I wanted darker and left the areas I wanted a lighter colour almost clear of colour. Then, with the blender pen, I drew colour from the darker area gently into the uncoloured area to get the lighter colours. I used the Melon Mambo, Bermuda Bay, Old Olive, Basic Gray, Daffodil Delight and Pumpkin Pie Watercolour Pencils with the Blender pen to get these colours.
• This Inside the Lines Designer Series Paper stood up pretty well to the liquid from the Blender Pen. I wouldn't want to try anything wetter than that, but I was really satisfied with this job.
• The bees were stamped with 2 Step Stamping from the 2 bee stamps in the Dragonfly Dreams stamp set. There is a bee die in the Detailed Dragonfly Thinlit Dies, but I found it wasn't really a good fit with this stamp and ended up fussy cutting the bees out by hand so the lovely details wouldn't be lost.The die could be used for just a single layer black cardstock bee and it would work well for that.
•  The sentiment is from Dragonfly Dreams as well.

Jinxed!

Do you ever feel like you're a jinx? I love to watch hockey, but when there's a special game that I really want my team to win, I sometimes hesitate to watch because I'm afraid that if I do, they will lose. I feel like I'm a jinx! I know that it's pure superstition, but it's been proven so often in my experience that I can't help but believe it.

Last night, the World Junior Hockey Championships were finishing up with the Gold Medal Game. It was between arch rivals, the USA and Canada! Both teams had fought hard to be there and they were pretty evenly matched. I really wanted to watch the game, but, once again, was afraid my jinx would affect the outcome for Canada. This year is Canada's 150th birthday and I thought it was fitting that Canada should win the Gold Medal in such an auspicious year. Finally, I gave in and turned on the TV. I told myself that my superstition was ridiculous and that I had every right to watch the game! When I turned it on Canada was ahead by one goal and shortly after, scored again! I relaxed. They had a comfortable lead. Maybe I wouldn't jinx them this time. But before much time had elapsed, the US team came back and evened the score and held on to win the game in a shoot out! I did it again!

I'm sorry, boys!

Let's change the subject! I got out two of my new Sale-A-Bration stamp sets to make a birthday card for a friend yesterday!

• One is called Delicate Details and consists of five different lace edging stamps. Here I used one of them to emboss a lace edging on my card beside my center panel using White Stampin' Emboss Powder. The stamp was a little short for the 5 1/4" long panel so I had to join up the ends for a bit, but it wasn't too difficult.
• The second stamp set is called Avant Garden which has a variety of floral stamps and lovely sentiments. I used it here to create a bouquet using some collage stamping techniques in Flirty Flamingo, Peekaboo Peach and Tip Top Taupe. I love how it looks!
• I used the Peekaboo Peach Ruched Ribbon from the Annual Catalogue to create a little fork bow and add it to a band of the same ribbon along the bottom of the Very Vanilla panel.
• The sentiment, from the Avant Garden stamp set was stamped on a 3/4" strip of Very Vanilla, which was glued onto a 1" wide piece of Peekaboo Peach. The two were then oriented on a slanted line on the card and the ends were trimmed to be parallel with the vertical edges of the card. I added this strip with dimensionals.

Overall, the card makes me think of Spring, which is very welcome since it's really cold here right now!

Now, one of the first things we are doing this year, as a group of Stampin' Up! demonstrators in our group is to have a Shoebox Swap based on new stamp sets in the new Occasions catalogue! Basically, each demonstrator attending designs a card using a new product and then cuts enough projects for everyone else attending and puts all the supplies to make that card in a shoebox. When we get there, we each take a shoebox and make the card in it, then pass it on to the next person, and make the next card and so on until we've created all the designs that were brought that night. We go home with a bunch of great ideas for our classes, lots of fun and laughter and deeper old friendships and delightful new ones! How great does that sound?

My card used the Nailed It Bundle from the Urban Underground Suite of products (pgs. 46 - 48):

• My card started with shades of Crumb Cake and Early Espresso, but evolved into Basic Black, Smoky Slate, Silver Foil and Delightful Dijon. It all came down to the Urban Underground Specialty Designer Series Paper I wanted to use - the 2" strip at the top. It worked much better with the latter colours.
• Good old Hardwood - another hardworking background stamp that would be a good one to have in your arsenal! It's a good background for a lot of styles: masculine, rustic, beachy,....
• The wood panel needed a backing and Silver Foil was perfect, but it's not cheap and there is a way to get that for the backing and all the silver for the tools and nuts without using extra foil. It's quite possible to stamp all the tools in the center of the foil and die cut them with the Build It Framelits, along with two nuts, without having it show at all as you use the foil to back the wood panel. Just smart use of your paper.
• The hammer and screwdriver were also stamped in Basic Black Archival Ink on Delightful Dijon cardstock and die cut. Then the handles were cut from the rest of the tools and glued onto the Silver Foil version of the same tool, matching up the stamped lines evenly.
• The sentiment is from the Nailed It set and there is a matching hexagon die. I used the coordinating Urban Underground Designer Washi Tape to secure it on the card.
