Butterfly Brilliance and Joseph's Coat Technique for Monday Morning Live

butterfly brilliance joseph's coat 1

Happy Monday Morning! In keeping with my theme for my latest Monday Morning Facebook Live videos, I wanted to show you another "old" technique that I learned a long time ago but haven't used for ages. And since we have some lovely new In Colours coming up with the new 2021/22 Annual Catalogue, I thought the Joseph's Coat technique would be a good one to share.

I had my first pre-order for the new catalogue delivered on Friday, and with this catalogue I mostly ordered all the new *2021 - 2023 In Colour Ink Pads, Cardstock, Refills and Stampin' Blends markers. The colours are, for the most part, pastels and work really well for butterflies, so to share the Joseph's Coat technique, I thought that the Butterfly Brilliance stamp would be perfect. That, and the fact that one stamp fills the page makes it easy to complete the design.

*These are new products from the 2021-2022 Stampin' Up! Annual Catalogue which you will be able purchase starting on May 4, 2021.

I am demonstrating this technique and card on my Monday Morning Live FB Live video this morning and I'll post it here when I'm done:

Here's a closer look at the design:

  • On a black card base, cut at 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" and scored at 4 1/4" on the long side, I used a  4" x 5 1/4" background of one of the new up-coming In 2021-2023 In Colours - *Pale Papaya cardstock.
  • On a 3 3/4" x 5" sheet of Basic White cardstock, I used the Blending Brushes to sponge on four of the new up-coming *In 2021-2023 In Colours: *Fresh Freesia, *Pale Papaya, *Polished Pink and *Soft Succulent. I filled the entire sheet of Basic White with colour and blended them near each other.
  • I fit the Basic White blended sheet in the middle of the Stamparatus platform and used the magnets to secure it along two corners.
  • I lay the Butterfly Brilliance stamp rubber side down on this and arranged it the way I wanted it stamped, then brought down the hinged lid and picked up the stamp.
  • I dried the ink on the Basic White paper with the Heat Tool and then used a static reducer (Embossing Buddy) on it as well, so the embossing powder only goes where the image is.
  • I inked up the stamp in Versamark Ink and stamped it on the sponged Basic White cardstock using the Stamparatus. I removed it from the Stamparatus and covered the images with Clear Stampin' Emboss Powder, then heat set them with the Heat Tool.
  • It's important to make sure that every bit of the embossing powder is heat set or it will leave quite a mess on your finished piece.

  • Using a Tuxedo Black Memento Ink Pad with a direct to paper technique, rub the ink pad all over the paper until you've completely covered all the unembossed areas with a dark shade of black which completely covers up all the sponged colours underneath. Make sure to press hard enough to get in between all the little sections of the butterflies' wings.
  • Take a soft tissue and rub off all the ink where the clear embossing resists it.
  • The sentiment, from Loyal Leaves stamp set, is stamped on a left-over Paper Pumpkin label in a new 2021-2023 In Colour, *Polished Pink ink. The label is mounted on the card using Mini Stampin' Dimensionals.
