Choose Happiness for As You See It Challenges

So, Day 12 of daily migraines! This is getting old really fast. I just want to curl up somewhere and sleep for a week of oblivion! My meds will kill the migraine but not until half the day is over, and then I'm just very fatigued after that. But I have a class to give and one to prepare for, and of course, As You See It Challenges to design for.

I don't know if you've been over there lately, but we have a little change in our procedures. We are now running two week challenges, hoping that will give people a little more time to enter. Last challenge was the first two week challenge interval. This week we have one of Amanda's imaginative sketches:

When I saw it, I immediately thought, "Shaker card", so that's what I set about creating:

• This great sketch is perfect for creating a shaker card. They are very easy to do, once you understand the principle behind it. I punched a 2 1/2" hole in the front panel and glued a window sheet (acetate) on the back, covering the hole. Then I added some self-adhesive foam around the perimeter of the hole on the back as well. I added sequins, and stars punched out using the Confetti Stars Punch from a Silver Foil Sheet and a piece of Basic Black cardstock. Finally, I peeled off the film from the foam and glued a 3" x 3" piece of Tip Top Taupe over top of all of it. This forms an enclosed shaker compartment. Then all you need to do is adhere it to the card base.
• The sentiment panel is die cut using one of the Circles Collection Framelits which is just a bit smaller than the 2" Circle Punch. I stamped it with an image from the retiring Choose Happiness stamp set, and a sentiment from the Picture Perfect stamp set (which is not retiring).
• I backed the sentiment circle with a 2"circle of Basic Black and used some liquid glue to adhere them, and then to add them to the middle of the acetate sheet as shown.
• Have you ever had adhesive get on your window sheets? If so, you know how hard it is to remove. The adhesive remover only smears it worse, but Stampin' Up! has a product that will actually remove it: The Clear Block cleaning cloth! Just rub it with that and the adhesive will come right off.

Wahoo for The Paper Players and Global Design Project

I do like a good challenge. When I popped over to The Paper Players this week, I saw that they had a theme going on and that theme was Western! At first, I dismissed the idea of playing along because I have no western stamps at all. But I can't turn down a challenge. So I decided to dare myself to make a western card without any specifically western stamps!

As I looked through stamps, paper and DSP, I thought about what makes something a western design. Of course it helps if you have images of saddles, horses or cows, cowboy boots or hats, but barring those, I thought that wood grain would definitely give a western feel if embellished properly. So I got out the Hardwood Background Stamp and I noticed something on Choose Happiness that I'd never really seen before - it has wooden pennants! I also remembered an early Paper Pumpkin kit that had the sentiment, "Wahoo!" in it, and I thought that some thick Baker's Twine in Calypso Coral might just work.

With the sketch challenge from Global Design Project this week to fashion the layout of my card, I was ready to go.

And here's how it all turned out:

• Definitely a more feminine western design with the Calypso Coral for contrast and the little peek of Venetian Crochet Trim under the Burlap Ribbon. Does it look western to you?
• I suppose a Yeehaw would have been a bit more 'cowboy' but the rustic look of the Wahoo fit right in with the theme. The congratulations from Guy Greetings not only went well with the Wahoo! sentiment, but the font was compatible with the theme, I thought. I added a little design under it with a border from the Tin of Cards stamp set and mounted it on the Burlap Ribbon.
• I know rope isn't coral coloured but the Calypso Coral Thick Baker's Twine used as a border on the top panel and coiled for a rope definitely added to the theme. I added the twine with little drops of Liquid Multipurpose Glue along the borders and squished a glue dot together to anchor the little dipsy-doodles on the corners. Glue dots also attached the coil of Thick Baker's Twine.

So I think I successfully met the challenge I gave myself. What do you think?
