Tropical Chic for As You See It Challenges

It's a quick post today as I prepare for a big craft fair today at George Pringle Elementary School. 

It's one that I do each November and I hope you will join me there today from 1 pm to 7:30 pm if you live in the Okanagan area. There are 60 vendors and it's a good opportunity to get some Christmas gifts. I'll be featuring some cards and novelties as well as a few of my retired products and featuring some classes coming up in the near future, such as my Advent Calendar class to make this kit:

Meantime, it's an As You See It new Challenge Friday, and today, it's a colour challenge, splashed together by Design Team member, Jane Knudsen:

Here's my sample:

• I was definitely thinking tropical with these pure colours, so I got out my long neglected, but definitely loved Tropical Chic stamp set and inked up those pure primary type colours to create a jungle-like background.
• I added a little Crumb Cake as my neutral in the mix to soften the effect of those high-powered greens and blues.
• The Noble Peacock Specialty DSP and Foil Sheets both have Blueberry Bushel sheets in them so I made use of them for some shine on my card.
• And to balance that, some Braided Linen Trim for the tropical rustic look.
• The little bird with the bright colours isn't a parrot, but he's from the Free as a Bird stamp set and could be a bird from the tropics. Have you ever noticed how brightly coloured their plumage is compared to most North American birds? I stamped him in Blueberry Bushel and used a Blender Pen to move the ink from the outline to the middle as well as add other colours to the bird's breast.

Magical Moment with Free As a Bird

I'm back from a camping holiday with my family and thanks for being patient and allowing me one of the first "real" holidays I've had in six years, where I haven't had to worry about having blog posts ready to cover the days I'm away. It was wonderful. It was also wonderful because I had all my girls and all my grandchildren along on the camping trip! (Sons-in-law, too!) While we were at our first location, we had a Magical Moment:

Our camping trip was to the Cariboo. The first part was at Green Lake, near where Ken's parents used to own a cabin where we would spend our summer holidays back when we were young and penniless. We have so many fond memories of our time there. We walked down to see it from our campsite, and Kristen knocked on the door to see if we could just look around the yard again. Well, the lovely owner, an 84 yr old lady, invited us in for a look around (all 14 of us!! Bless her heart!!) and as soon as we looked into the main living area, we burst into tears. So many things had not changed and the memories came flooding in! That was the magical moment! Guess who I made a card for today?

• I used the Free As a Bird stamp set and the Bird Ballad Designer Series Paper as the basis for this design. On the card base of Pool Party, I added a panel of Bird Ballad DSP backed by some Crumb Cake cardstock.
• I stamped the birds on a branch image from Free As a Bird stamp set on Whisper White cardstock using Memento Tuxedo Black ink and coloured in the image using the Pool Party Stampin' Blends Combo and the Petal Pink Stamping Blends Combo. For the branch and leaves I used the Crumb Cake Combo and the Old Olive Combo of Blends. 
• I die cut it using the Stitched Nested Labels Dies and die cut a Silver Foil Backing for it at the same time. I coloured in the background using the Light Soft Sea Foam Blends colour.
• Both sentiments, which are perfect for the lovely lady who let all 14 of us invade her house, come from the Free As a Bird stamp set. One is stamped right on the image panel, and the other is stamped on a Whisper White flag and mounted on the image panel, as shown.
• The finishing touch is using the neutral coloured ribbon from the Magnolia Lane Ribbon Combo Pack to create a ruched ribbon look by running a strip of Tear & Tape Adhesive along the width of the DSP panel and apply the ribbon by hand; turning, bunching and pressing on the tape, every 1/4"- 1/2" or so to create the ruches.
• A little bow of Mossy Meadow linen thread completes the picture.
