One Day Craft Crop to Aid Refugees

Well, tomorrow is the day I've been working toward for a couple of weeks now, our One Day Craft Crop to Aid Refugees. I'm really excited for this event! Our church foyer is such a great place for a crop! The natural light is so fantastic and there is so much room for everyone to work. The best part is that, because it's a fund raiser for our church group, as we sponsor a Syrian refugee family, we get the venue for free, which keeps the cost low for everyone.

We are getting excited because we know it won't be long before our family travels to Canada now and all our fundraising will be put to good use!

I have been having fun designing some quick little tags and labels for our swag bags and goody boxes:

Here's a closer look at the tag I designed for the swag bag. It relies on the Sweet Soiree Specialty Designer Series Paper and the Label Me Pretty stamp set with the Pretty Label Punch.

And thank goodness for the Silver Mini Gable Boxes because they are already so decorative that they didn't need much to make them look special. I used the Sweet Cake Framelits to make a decorative tag and added the sentiment die cuts from the Mini Treat Bag Thinlits! Die cutting them from cardstock backed with the Multipurpose Adhesive Sheets was a real time saver for this project, because I only had to peel and stick those fine-lined die cuts!

That's all the time I have today, as I am getting all set up this afternoon. I'll try to get some photos to show you on Monday! Have a great weekend!

Love Sparkles for As You See It Challenges

This is the time of year for anniversaries, at least in the Northern Hemisphere. Most people like to have their weddings during the warmer months so that they can incorporate the outdoors in at least some of their celebrations, even if it's just the photographs. So from May to October, you will be likely making most of your anniversary and wedding cards. Our latest As You See It Challenge is a theme challenge that is very timely:

So I set out to make an anniversary card, but as I was considering more traditional ideas, one stamp set from the Occasions Catalogue caught my eye and a whole idea for a card popped into my mind! The stamp set was Love Sparkles, and it is retiring in two weeks, so if you like it, it's one that you had better order quickly so that you are not disappointed. Stampin' Up! will only be manufacturing the retiring stamp sets for three more days until May 22 and then it's while supplies last!

Here's what flashed through my mind:

  • I used the new In Colour Berry Burst* as the card base and background panel for this card. The Designer Series Paper is from the Colour Theory Designer Series Paper Stack* which is an intriguing play with colours, including paint chip like designs, ombre designs and these crackle designs.
  • I paired it with a panel of Sweet Sugarplum and you can see how well they go together. This panel was embossed with the new Oh My Stars Embossing Folder*. In one version of this card, I used Clear Wink of Stella on all the embossed stars, but it made the design just too busy, so I opted for the plain embossed ones.
  • The heart and the word love are die cut with the Sunshine Wishes Thinlits Dies from Dazzling Diamonds Glimmer Paper. It looks much more shimmery in real life than the photo gives it credit for!
  • The "Let True" part of the sentiment is from the Love Sparkles stamp set but it is two separate stamps. The first stamp says Let Love, so I masked the word love and just stamped "Let" in Berry Burst Ink. Then I used the Stamp-A-Ma-Jig to get the word "True" placed exactly right. I punched these out with the Classic Label Punch and shortened it to fit the words.
  • I stamped the word Sparkle using Berry Burst ink and added Clear Wink of Stella to the little starbursts on the letters, although you can't really tell from the photo. I used the new Pretty Label Punch* to punch it out and it looks like the two were made for each other. I backed it with another of the same shape punched from some Berry Burst cardstock.*

Ribbon of Courage and Refugees

One of the new stamp sets in the upcoming 2017 - 18 Annual Catalogue is a set called Ribbon of Courage*, which is a set inspired by Million Dollar Sales Achiever Patty Bennett. It was an all-attendee give-away at OnStage this time. There is a coordinating set of framelits called Support Ribbon Framelit Dies* that can be bundled with this stamp set for a 10% saving, but they weren't part of the give away so I don't have those yet. These loops of ribbons in all different colours signify support for different causes and salute the courage of the victims and survivors of different diseases or experiences.

I wanted to highlight one of the new In Colours, and I chose Berry Burst*, but I found later that there are no causes that use ribbons of this colour, so I decided to pick one myself. Today our Refugee Care Collective from our church met for a pot luck lunch, and for the first time, we were able, via Messenger, to meet and interact with the Syrian Refugee family that we are sponsoring to bring to Canada in the next ten to twelve months! It was wonderful to see them all and talk to them. The family consists of a mother - a widow - and her 6 children ranging in age from 9 to 18 years of age. The mother's sister already lives in our area, sponsored by another group, and her family joined us as well and helped to act as our translators. It was very exciting. In the meantime, we have a lot of fundraising to do, so that we are well prepared to support our family for a year and beyond when they arrive!

Since the father of our family was killed in the bombing in Syria, the family have had a very difficult time ever since and have certainly earned a ribbon of courage! My proposal is that this colour, Berry Burst, be the colour saluting the courage of refugees fleeing their homes in effort to find safe haven from the horrors of war. What do you think?

  • The ombre-looking Berry Burst Designer Series Paper you see is a new product called Colour Theory Designer Series Paper Stack*. There are some fantastic ombre and crackle designs in this series. You'll have to have it when you see it! I've paired this Berry Burst hue up with Crumb Cake and I think it's a good fit!
  • The ribbon and sentiment are both stamped with the Berry Burst Classic Stampin' Pad*. The enamel shapes you see are new and are called Glitter Enamel Dots* and will be available in the Annual Catalogue. I love that they are ombre as well!
  • The Layering Ovals Framelit Dies die cut the ribbon and the backing for this card and the new Pretty Label Punch* took care of the sentiment and its backing.
*New products from the 2017-18 Annual Catalogue, available on June 1.
