Black and White for Pals Paper Arts

A good challenge sketch gives you a basic layout for a card without dictating too may details so that there is lots of room for artistic interpretation and that's the way it was this week over at Pals Paper Arts. Dawn Tidd provided us with a very basic sketch that left lots of room for the imagination.

My imagination, however, took some time to ignite. I was doing too much 'inside the box' thinking and it left me pretty uninspired. Finally, I had an idea for the middle horizontal stripe that fueled the whole design. It was the flourish from a stamp set that I haven't used for a long time, Everything Eleanor. And after I'd decided to use many of the images from that set, I thought they would look really classy in black and white (and gray.) Here's what resulted:

  • The card base is Whisper White, although it's hard to see in this photo. On that I used some Everyday Chic Designer Series Paper, which is a set of black and white designs. The middle stripe, as I've already mentioned, is the flourish from Everything Eleanor. I stamped it twice using Basic Black Archival Ink.
  • The center circle becomes the label shape from Everything Eleanor, stamped in Basic Gray Archival ink and then I stamped all three flowers in Basic Black and Basic Gray Archival inks.
  • All these shapes needed to be fussy cut, as Stampin' Up! has no coordinating framelits, but I find that quite soothing and therapeutic. I know, I know, I'm weird that way!
  • The sentiment is one of my favourites, from the Wetlands stamp set. I love the font so much! I stamped it then die cut it using the Project Life Cards & Labels framelits.
