Pop of Paradise for The Paper Players

I'll never forget the first time I saw a flock of flamingos at the San Diego Zoo. I was astounded at their beautiful colouring, and since that coral pink colour is my favourite, I was all the more excited. But I think what really floored me was that the water in their enclosure was almost the same colour of pink! For a minute, I thought the colour was running off their feathers to dye the water in the enclosure. I have since learned that what gives the flamingos their beautiful colour is also to blame for the water's discoloration. The presence in the water of brine shrimp and other organisms, the flamingos' regular diet, are high in carotenoids, which are the pigments that cause the flamingos' naturally grey feathers to turn pink, cause the water to look the same colour.

I was excited to get a new stamp set yesterday, in the preorder, called Pop of Paradise. It contains a flamingo image, tropical leaves, a pineapple and some sentiments with a definite tropical flavour.

I decided to play along with The Paper Players' Tic Tac Toe Challenge this week, going for the diagonal row with Yellow, Die Cuts, and a Paper Clip.

I combined the Pop of Paradise with die cuts from the Botanical Builders Framelits and a little paper clip on the sentiment.

  • When I inked up the flamingo image in (what else?) Flirty Flamingo ink, I used a Qtip to remove a little ink from the legs, so they would look a little whiter and from the tip of the beak, so I could add some Basic Black using a Stampin' Write Marker. (Did you know that with this new catalogue, Basic Black is now the only Stampin' Write Marker you can buy separately?)
  • I die cut some Cucumber Crush leaves, and a Daffodil Delight and a Flirty Flamingo flower using the Botanical Builders Framelits. In a previous version of this card, I used the leaf images from Pop of Paradise to add a thicker jungle growth look, but decided to go with just the die cuts for a bit of a cleaner look.
  • The sentiment is also from Pop of Paradise. I punched it out with a 1 1/4" Circle Punch, and a Flirty Flamingo backing with the 1 3/8" Circle Punch, and mounted the two of them on a Lots of Labels die cut from Daffodil Delight cardstock. I added a little paper clip, retired now from the Occasions catalogue to meet the challenge criteria.
